My SE Passport is performing enormously better in the corners of photos than my OG Passport (which is also brand new). The centers look basically the same, though the SE is still clearer. The SE white balance is also much more accurate, even though I'm running the same OS version, found with Saichi.

It looks to me that the actual lens has been improved. Can someone perform similar tests and verify my findings?

    Take a look, bottom-left corner:

Take a medium distance picture with both phones. Not a closeup. I'd say 3-4 feet for this test. Focus on the exact same spot and use the hold and release method to make sure they're sharp.

Choose a corner subject that has content near the same focal plane as your center subject. Take the same photo and compare. I used wifi-direct to transfer the photos to a single phone, then posted cropped screen captures.

Maybe the software was upgraded. Are the software versions the same?

In my first post I noted that the software is the same release. 10.3.2.2226. I just want someone to confirm that my OG Passport isn't a bad copy and that the lens has actually been improved. Obviously some software has changed due to the improved white balance performance. But that wouldn't account for the phenomenal difference in corner sharpness.

Maybe others that have both Passports will do what you did and post their results and compare.

Rear cameras are the same internally... but maybe a different lens. No way to really tell. However, front facing cameras are different.

it looks like your og passport is taking crap photos because mine would never focus that badly. Also unless you are testing using a tripod and timer at the exact same location you can't do a comparison

You need to make a grid (at the very least) to see if there is really any distortion difference.

Glad to hear the front camera was changed, because the one on the orig Passport is terrible.

    SE: f/2.0 at 1/5s and 798iso

    OG: f/2.0 at 1/5s and 798iso

According to my exif viewer, exact same settings for both shots. Though the SE came out a bit hotter. I'll do a more scientific writeup later today with full shots. Last night I just didn't want to post a full-size of my messy bedside table (which does make for a perfect testbed).

Lens housing could contribute to this difference. With that said, you need to use a tripod and timed shutter. Otherwise this comparison does not make sense.

Here are the centers from the same shot. There's no camera shake. But as I said, I'll retake some new shots in better conditions, and with more information, and at different distances.

I think the difference in the two images to too large to be attributed to hardware improvements considering the fact that the camera is the same in both.

I was recently investigating the effects of ISO, shutter speed and metering using my old point and shoot digital camera and learned just how much it can affect the focus of distant objects. The difference could be explained by a minuscule shake or a slight deviation in the colour of the focal point (light vs dark, straight lines at the focal point...)

The settings were exactly the same according to exif data. The centers are both sharp and similar in appearance. The only differences are white balance and corner sharpness.

Unless my brand new OG Passport from BH is faulty, then I think these preliminary results shouldn't be dismissed, but rather confirmed by someone who has camera knowledge and both handsets.

Perhaps you could try a printed camera test chart... Maybe stick it to a wall and paint lines on a desk to have a fixed position.
