I'm next to zero-knowledgeable in financial stuffs, but the Market Realist's analysis (with that figure) was cited by a well-reputed news agency (Reuters, I think) so I believe it.

All of these statistics are based off of the data collected by BlackBerry World in the month of February for downloads of the free check-list app Stuff I Need

At that time BlackBerry Passport devices accounted for 7.4% of downloads of that app, which is in line with my own numbers for that period.

If we put the total number of BB10 devices active on the market at that time at 8,000,000 (a rather conservative value, in my opinion) - the number of Passports at the end of February should be approx. 560,000

Of course, this is a very rough approximation, but it give us the order of magnitude of the sales number of Passport devices, so we can be sure that 8,000 pcs sold in 1Q 2015 is a false statement.

As well reputed the Reuters news agency might be, it's obvious they couldn't miss a good doom & gloom piece about BlackBerry, even if it was patently wrong.

Are there any official numbers from blackberry on how many passport devices they did sell? Or in other words: was the passport a successful device for blackberry?

NO, BlackBerry doesn't breakdown sales of individual devices.

Depends on what Chen expected of it. Was this just a product to be sold for a profit, or was it some type of marketing tool that was meant to improve the BlackBerry name or at least keep the BlackBerry name part of the conversation? I imagine with development cost added, the Passport would have been a commercial failure. But if you include it's marketing value... it might be seen internally as a success.

Based on the statistic of number of smartphones sold globally in 2Q 2015 (340 mil), BlackBerry's global market share (in number of shipments) in that period (0.3%), and your cited fraction of Passports sold for that period (7.4%), it implies that about 76000 Passports were sold in 2Q 2015.

BTW the '8000 pcs sold in 1Q 2015' that I cited earlier was _not_ from Market Realist or Reuters. It was from a brokerage firm, which could be well non trustworthy. I'm sorry for mixing things up.

I don't want to be picky, but the 76,000 number, even if larger than the initial 8,000 value, is wrongly calculated. The 7.4% figure represents the percentage of downloads for February 2015 for a certain app, so we must relate it to the whole of BlackBerry 10 fleet of active devices (because we cannot suppose that people are only downloading that app in the first 3 months after purchasing the device) - and not to those bought during one month.

So, instead of having

a) 7.4% from ~1,020,000 BB10 devices sold in 2Q 2005, which gives the ~76.000 / quarter,

we will have more like

b) 7.4% from ~8,000,000 active BB10 devices, which gives a total number of ~600,000 for a total of 5 months of availability (October 2014 - February 2015). Taking into account the sale of 200,000 pcs at launch, that gives an average of ~100,000 pcs / month or ~300,000 pcs / quarter.

I made this clear in order to know what is the correct significance of the 7.4% number (which in itself should not be considered as representing the exact percentage of Passport devices in the BB10 fleet).

I always thought people were buying blackberry for the keyboard... so it is a big surprise that the z10 was selling that well

Last figures I heard (pretty soon after launch) stated that roughly 50% (was it 47% ?) of Z10 buyers were from competitors ... this may explain that.
