I admit upfront not up on tech' !!

Wondering (probably generically) do ya need a data plan to access the internet ? Or would it BE similiar to the Playbook ?

Googled "Wi-Fi Direct" and browsing thru the wiki entry this particular item listed in the PP specs, would not !?

    thanks for any info/enlightenment !

So It's for device to device file sharing. It's like bluetooth x10000.

I send pics to my z30 from my q10 and I can send 10mb in under a second. Wicked fast!

Yeah that seemed to be the way I read this spec item !

Think to access the internet w/o dataplan (like our PB), need to see "wlan" listed in the specs.

Was hoping that "wifi direct" was new tech with combo abilities.

It's not new. Z30 and Q10 support it.

    "...It's not new...."

    Relative to WLAN it is

So nobody (over 280 viewers) knows if the PP (looking at specs) or supposedly similiars (Z30, Q10....) w/o a dataplan, can access the internet like the PB ?

I presume then it needs WLAN components !

    thanks !

The Passport can access the internet over wi-fi. Nothing to worry about there.

Yes, you can access the Internet using a Wifi connection, like at Starbucks or McDonald's or at home, without a carrier network connection. This has been the case for every smartphone built during the better part of the last decade!

    Thanks !

Surprised no one asked "WHY !"
. . . . . phone would be great but since we don't need internet connection 24/7 and with growing SHAWGo coverage at various locations (ie. YPG---YYC, ferreted out using the PB) a phone plan like 711SO would suffice for now (after cutting sim down to nano format (?), with either a Rogers PP or unlocked from BB. Will have to chk the marketplace next month or two....

    nite !
