The passport autofocus is very slow but when an object is in-focus, it's completely sharp and precise ! Thanks for those beautiful shots

When locking AF with tap+hold using the stock camera app it is very nice that AF remains locked even when switching flash modes. This is particularly convenient! What Camera++ does very well is AF lock at the closes focusing distance without the need to pre-focus as it is the case with the stock camera app.

Not sure, never owned the Key2 LE but it may also be related to the resolution of optics. Although software quite often mishandles a sensor which is actually a good one, optics should be adequate enough to handle the sensor. If I knew what @guizmox shared about the Passport's lens longer focal length, this would have made my choice much easier!

I think the Passport optics are pretty good, the sharpness of in-focus objects is quite impressive.

I am fairly satisfied with how the Passport handles WB. In addition, the out-of-focus subjects look neutrally blurred. I fully realise how good the lens is, so much in this topic is owed to the Passport's adequate optics!

I totally agree that the PP is amazing in low light, but are you sure that it can do a shutter speed of 1.0 seconds? With camera++ I can only go as long as 0.5 seconds...

yes, I remember a conversation with the dev' (and I guess we still can find it here on crackberry) saying that the API only exposes a small range of the full shutter speed range. The lowest and higher values can only be triggered in auto-mode (with some tricks : you have more chances to trigger the 1s speed by using "night" mode, and the fastest by using "sports")

The "Sports" mode will basically tell the software to use a faster shutter speed, and the "Night" mode will do the opposite... the ISO setting will then be a lower priority during the exposure measurement.

What is the actual magnification ratio you get? Extra optics means extra trouble in regard to sharpness and DOF. What is your overall experience with this combo?

    It's a true 4.5x (https://fr.pixter.co/products/macro-...uctDescription)

I tried various lenses but most of them are crap : as you described, pictures are mushy, and lot of image distorsions. Those are pretty decent, metal ring and real quality glass. I'm satisfied with it.
The most impressive results I had was to clip it on the Key2 x2 lens. It provided incredible macro shots. Let me show you a sample. Chicken skin.

This is the best result yielded with night mode and the stock camera app @ 1/17s

Conclusion: Passport is the great daylight performer with outstanding optics offering macro functionality. Low-light scenes are not its strength.

Achieving a low-light shot is not easy on that device, and requires some tricks and patience, but I like the results much more than those I obtained with the Priv for 2 reasons :

    - The Priv can't go below a 1/2s shutter speed
    - The Priv, like most of the smartphones of that era, massively reduces the color saturation in low-light situations (explanation here : https://www.theverge.com/2016/10/27/...-light-feature)
"Levoy also said that “by taking multiple images and aligning them, we can afford to keep the colors saturated in low light. Most other manufacturers don't trust their colors in low light, and so they desaturate, and you'll see that very clearly on a lot of phones — the colors will be muted in low light, and our colors will not be as muted."
    - The Passport does not mute the colors in low-light : those are hightly reduced, but not muted. I did some comparisons, of course

But, to be more global on the subject, I'm sure your beautiful results with macro shots are achieved with patience & talent. That's why, despite the flaws and/or limitations of a camera, a good photographer learns how to extract the best of it... by learning it.

@guizmox With ISO 888 and 1/17s with the stock app there were good macro results at dusk that were not muted at all (but camera shake occurred, as expected and ruined the test). I will probably need to use the ugly and disintegrating genuine hardshell Passport case in order to mount the phone on a tripod. Before testing this in detail, I will post the very last peach blossom from today. Again, WB is accurate and defocus is pleasant.

Passport handles digital noise decently if you can keep the ISO < 800 ISO. On the Key2, anything > 400 ISO is really noisy
