Is this a normal feature of mobile technology in general or is this specific to this phone or my carrier?

I have the latest official os and my carrier is wind italy.

In the US this is normal, you will see the phone switch from LTE to 4G then back when the call disconnects.

Mine switches from 4g to 3g then hspa+, but I've never seen 4g during a phone call in over the year of use. Actually as soon as the phone starts ringing the 4g instantly drops

I think that is normal. My phones switch to 3G or H+ while on a call.

In the settings, you can have the phone use only "LTE & 4G/3G" network mode. But i've rarely see my phone connected to 3G... it jumps between LTE and 4G mostly.

It's on the carrier. If your carrier support VoLTE (voice over lte) you will not get 3G while calling.

A carrier that supports VoLTE will not use the setting unless the phones software or program calls to piggyback on it, otherwise the default is a step down.
