It is such a tragedy that Chen did not market the Passport and did not make enough right off the bat.

I saw a friend from out of town with his kids. His kids are all playing with various gadgets while we're talking -- Androids and iPhones. Without me even taking my phone out one of them asked if I still have my Blackberry. I forgot they ever noticed it over a year ago. These kids still remember the Passport.

I pulled it out and a couple of them huddled over to look at it. They couldn't believe how different it looks. I tried to explain why it is so great, but I don't think they got it. But anyway, this phone could have found many, many more buyers had the public at large learned of its existence. It stands out in a very good way.

    I agree it stands out.

But people would have still wanted instagram or whatever, and on that front, BlackBerry 10 isn't the best platform.

"People" is not every 2 billion of smartphone users. There would have been enough had people known that the phone existed.

Meh. People also knew about Windows Phone. Still didn't work out well for them.

Actually Passport is *better* for Instagram because it has native square camera sensor.

    Isn't the sensor 4:3 like everyone else's?

It's a design not see on any other mobile phone. My colleagues just stare in awe when I'm using it. Always curious about it and ask if they can hold it. Their reactions are priceless.

    Yes, it is lol

You can see that 4:3 is the native aspect ratio of the camera by looking where the number of pixels are at the highest in the screenshot attached.

That funny, you are right and I was wrong.

For whatever reason android apps like Vivino think that sensor is square and go nuts.
For Instagram it does not really matter ;-)

I've had the passport for a day and a half the only reactions were that thing is huge, it's a laptop not a phone. The sound impressed them, iphone 4 & 5 users

Passport is still a niche market but they could easily have sold more if people knew about it. I had the same experience, in meetings people would always wonder about my Passport and some would even ask for a brief demo of it. And just like you, a year later, they were amazed with my Passport SE after having seen me demo the original Passport a year earlier. Apparently, they tried looking for it through the usual channels (carriers and in physical stores) after they saw my demo but couldn't find it anywhere.

The Priv also had the same issue, I had to search high and low to find a working demo unit in store to be able to play with it.

People don't know about Blackberry's products and second when they do know (through friends), they couldn't find one. Some people still like to see the unit and hold it before buying it and only a few buy blindly buy through the Internet without having actually touched or seen the item.

Couldn't agree more. The reactions I get are priceless...it all starts with, "What is that? BlackBerry? Is this 2005?" with lots of laughter. And then once I give a little demo the reaction changes to, "oh, that's actually pretty cool." I just can't understand how they could have so badly botched the whole BB10 launch, except that the masses mostly want something that they can use easily. BlackBerry requires a little finesse, some effort to learn and use effectively. My wife, for example, on Android, enjoys tech but has no interest in file management, file sharing, security, BBM, push email, word docs or spreadsheets, quality phone calls or even bedside mode. And she's a typical user - sms, camera, and entertainment apps are all she's interested in.

BlackBerry 10 phones are for nerds - even loading Snap is way way way too much for the average smartphone user to attempt.

Maybe I love my Passport too much. The other day she said, "if I'd didn't know better I'd think you're having an affair, you can't put your phone down." Maybe I should give my Passport a name.

I get asked about my Passport all the time, "They still make those".. I get to tell them how great it is, user wise, the hub, physical keyboard, track-pad... they smile, but at least it's better than having the same phone as everyone else. It's almost like we've forgotten about individuality.

Fascinated until they find out its a BlackBerry. Then the conversation goes to "Didn't know BlackBerry was still in business" or "BlackBerry still makes phones?", or all fascination is lost and they look down at you for using a BlackBerry.

Mine gets a lot of looks but here in the UK people don't usually walk up to strangers and ask about phones so they go away not knowing what they just saw.

I've been using mine for about a week. People do get surprised.

    "It's so squarish"
    "Blackberry's still around?"
"What's that, Blackberry.... Never heard of them"
"Is that the newest Blackberry? Looks kinda neat, hows the camera" (of course it sucks for the price)
"Is that thing real? It's a phone? Really? Did you make that yourself?"
"How much did you pay for that thing? WHAT? I dunnnooooo.... a Blackberry.... you sure?" (Die hard Apple fan. I told him I got it used for $200 just to gauge his reaction)
