I received my red Passport from Amazon earlier this week. I am enjoying the device; however, I have a concern about the keyboard build quality. My Q10's keyboard seems to be better built: The keys feel firmer. The keys on the right side of my Passport's keyboard seems less firm than the left side. The right side also makes a creaking noise, especially the second row and when I press the chin. I looks like the G, H, J keys and half of the space bar key sits lower than the rest of the keys.

Do I have a defective device or is it a general poor build quality?

I think the Passport has the better quality keys. They are soft whereas the Q10 ones feel really plasticy. I liked the keys on my Passport better than my Q10

Not having seen the device, but it sounds defective to me. My Passport has no problems with creaking or anything like you are describing. I would return it if possible.

Passport keyboard is perfect. Yeah its spread out wide which does make a difference in speed, but the softness is welcome.

There is nothing wrong with the build quality of the passport, that's why it won an award for design excellence. So maybe you have a defective keyboard just return it for a replacement.

This keyboard feels like it can take a beating and continue to work. The whole device feels like a tank.

I just ordered a replacement from Amazon due to a similar keyboard issue. In my case, the problem is more with the K,N,L,M,Delete,Enter keys. There is a softer feel and secondary "click" after releasing those keys, as if the membrane underneath is sticking for a moment, then popping back up (sorry, not exactly sure how to describe it). This is a minor issue though and everything else on the device is solid. If the replacement has any issues I'll just keep the original.

What you described sounds like my experience. I'll contact Amazon for a replacement. It's a great device that I have enjoyed using. I'm just concerned that the keyboard issue might become a bigger problem the more I use it.

Yes, the device feels solid. $699 is a big chunk of change, so I wanted to check with others about the keyboard build. No BS. No rumors. Just checking with others to determine if it needs to be replaced.

    Thank you for this post!

It helps future Passport owners to be aware of what to check out for when they first receive the device.

I returned my original red Passport to Amazon for a replacement. The keys are much better and I do not hear the creaking sound. Amazon also refunded $100 to my credit card because of the sale price! I am now a truly happy Passport owner!!

I believe the Q10 was made by Blackberry and the Passport is being made my Foxconn...the same manufacturer as many other smartphone handsets. I am hoping the quality increases as the device matures.

Yes, it is according to a few of my sources. Here is one: RIM BlackBerry Passport LTE-A SQW100-1 / Q30 (RIM Windermere) Detailed Specs | Technical Datasheet | PDAdb.net

Please inform us who manufactures the Passport and site your source so that you may re-edumucate us.

This is an issue that various users have reported, myself included. I'm on my third PP now and this one has a solid keyboard. But my first one had issues with some of the keys feeling looser than the others.
