Neither. The problem is a design defect in the motherboard, and once it crops up, that phone is dead (as far as mobile calls/networking goes). You can replace the phone, of course, but it's likely that every PP will eventually have this failure if used long enough.
Citation needed please...there is a known design "flaw" with the chassis a la "Bendgate" but I've never seen anything about the "defect in motherboard". Can you provide a link?

There are posts about this issue right here in this forum going back almost 2 years about it. There are a couple of threads right here on the front page.

Yeah, I've seen those posts but that's not exactly documented proof and there is no acknowledgement by BB that I know of. I don't doubt some Passports are having problems connecting to networks and some people are having problems, but I would not count out networks themselves as the problem or any number of other errors, including user error. My Passport is now 3.5 years old and my neighbor has one almost as old---no problems whatsoever.

Why would BB acknowledge flaws in old, discontinued products, especially when they have no means of repair or replacement? That would just open them up to needless liability. Given that they're not in the device business anymore, there's nothing for BB to gain in dealing with those problems.

But the problems have been documented in markets all over the world, on many different networks, and quite a few have attempted to get their devices repaired only to be told it wasn't possible. And some have purchased replacement devices that worked just fine on their networks, so it's definitely not a network/carrier issue.

I mean, you can believe what you like, but this isn't a problem that's only affected a couple of people - a few people have experienced the problem with multiple devices. It's all right here in this forum for anyone to read...

I totally disagree with your argument on this. We will just have to agree to disagree, I guess. The problem is not nearly as prevalent as you seem to think. I stand by my assertion that there could be many other reasons for the few cases that we have heard about here on CB. Just about any other phone brand you can mention has had network, wifi, bluetooth or radio connectivity problems of one sort or another.

I have had my Blackberry since 2015 and never a problem with it seeing the mobile network (spark, Auckland, New Zealand).
They did some scheduled maintenance at some of the towers, which I am thinking may have involved modifications of some sort.
Either way, once the system was up for everyone, my BlackBerry Passport still cannot see and connect to the mobile network.

Seems to me that this is unlikely to be a hardware or software issue with my blackberry.
And more to do with something changing in the towers maybe ?

I have put my SIM card in a Samsung Galaxy and I have access to the mobile network.

    Thoughts on this ?

Do I have to quite my lovely Blackberry Passport now, as I don't think a repair or a new one will possibly solve this.
Or do I just carry 2 phones around now.
My Blackberry for emails and new phone for phone calls and texts (sad not to have my blackberry keyboard for texting)

If no calls or texts, how are you getting email?

I am at home and still have full functioning wifi connection, which picks up my emails.

I am pretty sure I wont get my emails when I leave home and those come through the mobile network.

Yeah that's kind of hopeless isn't it.

It sounds like they re-farmed the tower's antennas to bands that your phone doesn't support. That's not surprising given the age of the phone and the constant change in phone frequencies and services as old, slow services are decommissioned in favor of faster, more efficient ones.

I'm sure you could contact Spark and get the details of the tower change from them (don't expect an immediate answer, but if you are persistent, you should be able to find out), but, yeah, it's likely Spark no longer supports the bands you were using previously. Not sure if NZ is moving to 5G services already or not, but in the US, 2G and 3G services are going away and 5G is coming in.
