Haven't had this issue myself. Do a hard reset ie hold both volume up n down buttons together till the loading circle comes up. Try running BlackBerry virtual expert too after the hard reboot and see if any of your sensors aren't working. Could be a faulty device if your sensors are failing.

I had this come up on Day 1 but never again. Many have posted about this.
I did a hard reset as advised.

I have had this issue and have recently found that pressing the lock key has turned on the backlight.
I did the hard reset as well. Problem solved.

Yeah must be defective it works sometimes I did hard reset no luck as I type now it isn't lit. I tried the test there are none in regards to the back lighting.

What version are you running. There is an issue in a build that the phone may not respond to the sensors. A reboot corrects it. 10.3.01418 corrects it.

I have 10.3.0.908 though my BB link says i have 10.3.0.1418. According to the Blackberry Support website KB36375 knowledge base, the issue is being looked at just no time line when it will be done.
The BlackBerry Passport Sensors are no longer detecting changes in the current environment that pertain to:
Lighting
Proximity
Magnetic direction
Acceleration
Gyroscopic positioning
This may lead to the following behaviors:
The Keyboard backlight does not turn on in dark environments.
The display brightness does not respond to changes in the surrounding lighting conditions.
While on a phone call, the display screen does not turn off when the BlackBerry Passport is held up to the ear.
The Compass, as well as other augmented reality application(s), may not function correctly.
I've had it happen twice. Reboot fixes it.

Same as you.
Same, only fix seems to be a reboot. It is a pain, hopefully an update resolves the issue.
I've had the problem of the keyboard light. Reboot and hard reset sometimes fix the problem. After the keyboard problem i had the proximity sensor no working. Tried everything.but, then i got it replaced. As for the keyboard an update shall fix the problem like with the q10 before
