Q5 on 10.3.1 gets much better results than my Passport, so I travel with both in case I need to take pictures

I think the camera lens / sensor is solid - I've gotten some pretty good quality shots. Unfortunately it *is* the software making it a less than ideal experience - mainly around autofocus. It never autofocuses correctly, even when tapping to focus, and if it *does* get focus it never locks and constantly resets itself if you or the subject move even a little bit.

If you install "Nova Launcher" from snap, and launch the stock android camera that it links you to, you'll see that autofocus is always on point. Maybe a tad slow, but it is consistent, and stays locked.

Hoping an update fixes the camera software... we need it, bad!

Absolutely same thing here. Unfortunately I'm not sure what actually happened with the latest update. It seems the camera is snappier and shots worse.

I think if the image has good lighting then the camera is fine. But if there isn't full bright light then the camera is pretty bad. Below is an image taken with the iPhone 6plus and the Passport. They were taken in the exact same lighting. The Passport really struggles if there isn't a decent amount of light in the shot.

    Attachment 338028

    iPhone 6Plus:
    Attachment 338032
I am experiencing the same thing. My pics were ok but now it's just the same as shown here.

Is everybody on 10.3.1? Since the update the camera is rock solid. The PP used to take great photos with the previous firmware, but you had to work around issues like slow/no focus etc. I don't have to do that any more. The focus isn't perfect - it is still a tad slow - but it is much improved and even gets good lock at night.

The camera is fine, it's the software controlling the camera that's crap. My autofocus and auto flash detection was fine before the last software update. The update fixed the flickering but screwed the camera. Here's hoping the next update will correct this problem.

My Passport is running 10.3.1.1779, and it says that is the latest... and the camera still doesn't focus fast enough.

This may be a dealbreaker. Can tolerate the lack of apps (or refined apps), but need a camera that's ready to capture life.

Setting to "action" mode makes no difference. None of the settings or features seem to fix things.

Is there another software update that fixes this that somehow hasn't trickled down to my phone?

I wish there was a still picture shooting mode similar to video mode where the camera just takes screenshots of the fluid video movement.

The pictures would be so clear.

I think that is the secret to some other cameras picture quality and speed.

TO BE CLEAR: I am NOT referring to RECORDING the video and taking pics (which is already available). A mode that does NOT record video to take LIGHTNING speed shots.

Anything moving after focus is STILL BLURRY.

If you all didn't notice my sarcasm in my previous post, here is the official notice...

For what? The camera software is miles better now. If you really don't like the software, get camera++. For situations where there is fast movement in lower than ideal light, use the flash - that is what it was designed for it also has a focus assist light. Low light = slow shutter speed = movement/blur. Flash = fast shutter speed = no blur.

it may be miles better in comparison with itself but not with iphone 6 which snaps photos faster without blurr. Like others said, when you need to be able to take decent photos in the spur of the moment it's just so damn slow.. I don't want to have to buy another app again for something that should be baked into the OS. If it is still photos yes, it does take quality photos. Just constant refocusing and at family gatherings people need to be still and wait for it..

This has all been covered multiple times. The Passport camera is slow to focus compared to cameras that use Phase Detection autofocus. If you can handle the fact that it takes a bit longer to lock on to a focus, it's still a good camera. If you can't, you probably want to buy another device.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a loyal fan of BlackBerry since 2007. In fact, Passport is my daily phone. I can even forgo not being able to run some of my favorite apps (Viber, Zinio, Instagram...some local apps). Unfortunately...the camera sucks!

I can't say I agree as such entirely, but I do find that using Camera++ does work really well, it's snappy and does get the best from the phone camera.
