I've got an early PP which has just 2 chronic faults as far as I can tell: (1) the illuminated keyboard ons and offs according to no convention I've been able to discern (and often mid-task); (2) the phone often loses signal leading to missed comms, both send and receive. In the UK when this occurs the phone defaults to any available Emergency Only service provider, not sure what happens in Europe or USA. This 2nd thing is really an irritant.
    Is this common?
I had a PP SE for about a week but it frequently re-booted, interrupting whatever was going on. Collector's Item or not, this was plain unacceptable and apparently common?
My preferred phone - Z10 - has never faulted in this way. The signal is always strong (different aerial??) and there's no random shutdown.
(It does occasionally freeze and not even a long press powerdown followed by restart frees it. Maybe 7 times in the 7, nearly 8, years I've owned it and there's no option to a ground zero reformatted fresh start.)
If only the Z10 had the PP's speed and capacity, and the PP's hard glass and maybe metal sidewalls, but its own shape, size and heft, it would be just perfect!

I've had my Passport (original) since day 1 practically and have never experience any of your problems. There are known problems with the motherboard/antenna and cracked solder via overheating resulting in the Emergency Only network problem and it has been well documented here. This, in all likelihood, is due to overheating while running power intensive tasks/games/video etc of which I have never really done. Maybe that explains the extreme longevity of my device.

I have to agree with brookie on this, I too am in the UK and never had a problem wih my passports reception, I also owned a Z10 and a Classic and never noticed any difference in their reception when compared to my passport.

I’m guessing your passport is beginning to show signs of the dreaded emergency calls only fault unfortunately, to which there is no easy fix.

Yup my Passport has been bullet proof, even when pushed hard. The idea is to let it cool down and not keep pushing.

This conversation has encouraged me not to conduct any experiments on my Passport with any newly heavily updated Android apks. Even without those apks, I sometimes feel the "strage" heat from top-right where I put my right point finger. Thanks folks ;-)

Probably a good idea. One of the thoughts here is over heating can cause the problem. Don't know if it is the cause, but might be a problem.

it's definitely heat that causes the network error on the Passport. I fried two of them. first time I had it in my pocket while working in a very high temp area and the second time was when I was using it on my deck in 40 degree Celsius direct sunlight.

Also will depend on if it is in a case.

Yeah at this point it might be wise to rig up some copper heatsink case... just to be safe.

My phone can heat up when doing wireless charging on an ATT PP.

Could this cause it? Seems like a good culprit.

It's usually related to heating at the top right corner near the CPU.

I’ve seen this but unless you have the skills and equipment to do the job yourself paying someone to do it will probably cost more than replacing it with a good second hand phone.

There is also no guarantee the fix will work on all passports either.

Good point. It sounded very technical and involved soldering I believe. Tiny parts.

Reading about the fix reminded me of my younger days when I used to take cars apart to fix them and always ended up with some nuts and bolts left over, well they always used to put extra bits in that weren’t really necessary right!

That describes my brother fixing our cars, trucks and boats our entire lives. I have nobody I’d trust more, but I worry every time I get on I-75 when I leave his place.

The more they’re fixed the less complicated they get, and you get more mpg as they’re lighter each time!

If you're good at it you can assemble it better than the factory. But that's uncommon and requires someone with attention to detail. There are a lot of slobs out there charging money to hack up things.

I know what you mean, I’ve had engines lightened, balanced and blueprinted and put them together myself which takes a lot of time and is expensive if you get someone else to do it properly!

A lot of people out there who are happy to charge top money and do a second rate job, in most industries, not just confined to cars.

I think my brother does it just to eff with me. I’m the older brother and we’ve always pranked each other.

Being a younger brother I can confirm he is!

It’s called getting even for all the times big brother had the upper hand when we were younger.

    Karma.

That’s ok, before Christmas I forgot half a bucket of bait in a pretty enclosed area of his boat. I was actually pretty nice to remember and tell him few days later

Sounds cool. There are probably 3 people in your city you could hire to do that and it would cost a fortune.
