Try updating to the latest OS.
Tap and hold for focus lock.
And switching off the blitz in light settings might be a good idea.

I have just tried the 1:1 ratio

I agree the PP camera is slow to focus but recently I was on a business trip with my friend who has a Samsung G5. Often his phone seem to take pictures that seemed to be out of focus. He would have me use his phone to take a pic of him and he seem to lag and be out of focus. I thought my PP took better pictures and seem to be smoother. My point is that I think any phone can have problems and I am hoping BB's update will help with the slow focus.

Another rather bad shot the BlackBerry Passport can produce

Scene: dynamic in low light (the only light was from the candle)
Software used: Camera ++ (by I&N MobiSoft).
    Device: BlackBerry Passport (10.3.0.908)
Extra params: EV offset was set to -2.0

    Attachment 331216
    Simply awesome

I agree with you....for a 13mp camera I find the camera sucks. You have to be able to hold the camera still and even then, are not guaranteed to get a good picture. Any phone I have ever had, I could snap a quick photo and get some exceptional shots. That would be one of my biggest gripes.

    Posted via CB10
    "... for a 13mp camera"...

So do you think that "megapixels" is the measure of "good/bad camera?

Today's top of the line 4k TV's (that almost nobody has yet) have only 8mp... so they are crap...

It's a $600+ multi use device for most people.

I send hundreds of messages through BBM or SMS daily, browse the web, check weather, banking, budget, etc. Oh and every so often I make or take a phone call.

The camera is an important part of the device. Most of us carry them around and want to be able to take it out and take a nice, quick shot rather than carrying around a dedicated camera. I felt my Q10 did a much better job (I usually had it on action) than my Passport does taking photos. It's a disappointing thing, but hopefully as others have said the software fixes it.

Looks like I should check out Camera++ too.

With any phone camera it takes some practice to know what settings to use to get the best picture in low lighting. And again most phones have trouble in low lighting especially when your across the room. Come on! I have been able to get some very decent low light pictures with my passport but I would test first for the best setting. I must say I do have to turn the camera away a little the back to have the sensors focus again. I preferred how on the Z30 I could drag the focus point on the screen on what I wanted. I hope they implement this in the passport.

I'm on a 10.3.1 leak and consistently kicking the pants of friends with iphones. The other night was in low light. Theirs were usually too dark to see what was going on.

Well impressed. 10.3.1 has some good improving camera tweaks.

LOL - Are your friend's still using iPhone 3's and 4's or something? because any iPhone 5s or newer absolutely destroys the PP's camera. I was at the Grand Canyon and took photos with my iPhone with NO flash after the sun had set and the pictures still were very viewable whereas the PP's camera's photo's were all blurry and I believe I am running the latest leak (10.3.1.2072)

Hopefully they make more changes to the camera software on the official 10.3.1 because not much has changed other than a very slight increase in the speed of focusing on the leaked 10.3.1.2072

Seems strange you would buy a phone with a camera built in and not expect it to produce images of a similar quality to other manufacturers

If you want a good picture buy a real camera. It will cure all the problems. It's a phone not a camera.
