I am a proud owner of a Passport since last weekend and in summary i am very happy to own such an amazing device. BUT the camera quality is far from acceptable. I even bought Camera++ because i thought it would improve the autofocus: No improvement.
And i checked for dirt on the lens, nothing.
Right now i am not sure if my Passport has a defect. Compared to your Photos in other threads the pictures from my device are very ugly and on several websites the passport cam performs very good compared to iPhone 6.
I would be very thankful for recommendations.

The following pictures were taken from a distance of approx. 1 meter. You cant even read the booktitles on the passport pictures. The last photo was taken from my iPad 4 (2,5 years old, 5 MP).

    Focus issue.

But is it an issue that is in a way normal on every passport or is this an issue of MY autofocus? I thought autofocus is done via software

This gave me much hope, but the result is still the same... Even for the previous pictures i waited for the green "focus square" to turn green.

What are you focusing at? Move the focus to the books and try taking photos then

    Out of focus!

If you want a clear book title, make the book title or book itself your subject. When you want a perfect portrait/head shot of a woman, focus the viewfinder to her eyes, not chin nor boobs.

Use 4:3 ratio to use all 13 megapixels of the camera and try again. I hope your lens isn't dirty on the inside or something. That would be terrible. Just saw the last picture you posted and I'm pretty sure my Z30's 8mp camera could take a better picture. I just couldn't believe that all passports will take a shot like that.

    Dirty lens:
Passport Cam vs. iPad 4. Is my Passport Cam faulty?-img_20150701_114247.jpg
You couldn't even tell it was dirty!

    Clean lens:

Edit: Was it a dim lighted room? The only issue I have with BlackBerry cameras. It has gotten better through software, but the focus in these situations has suffered. Maybe manually focusing by locking the focus and moving closer/further. I've never had a blur issue in bright areas though.

In every picture the focus was perfectly on the books. As you can see on the pics, there is no other object in focus.
After all i have read about the passport in very much reviews and comparisions like "Passport vs. iPhone 6" i am a little surprised that the cam is often praised for its 13MP and the picture quality... Are you guys sure that its not a defect on especially my PP?

Wow thank you. After using the phone for six months I just realized that I had not removed the protective plastic around the lens

Now the pictures are sharp and focusing is rapid.

That is awful. I really have to work to get a photo nearly that bad on my PP. The auto focus is slow at times but its fast enough to keep up with a 11month old baby with only the occasional blurry shot. Hands down better than the Z10 camera but perfect by any means. Passport Cam vs. iPad 4. Is my Passport Cam faulty?-img_20150614_155625.jpg Rotating chicken (poor focus) lots of glare and no manual focus. But still acceptable photo.

This is my third passport(after defective exchanges) and I think I did try the first passport by peeling all the protective plastic and was not impressed with the focusing and totally gave up on the camera. Plus the passport case I have now completely camouflages the camera plastic to notice.

    The usual fix for autofocus problems is to use it like a professional camera;

Press and hold the button on screen, then when it's focussed and your frameing is correct, you release the button and it takes the shot perfectly.

    Have fun :-)

The picture you are taking should be totally clear with your passport, try setting the focus to different points on the picture or maybe you got a faulty camera

Thanks for all the replies! Of course the plastic is removed ( ) and the lens is clean. And as i already said all the pictures were taken with the correct auto-focus and the trick with the button didn't work.

I will reinstall BB10 and will try to fix this via settings. I have no warranty but i can return the phone till the end of next week.
