In the end it doesn't matter.

I think I heard that Chen said only 200k need to be sold to turn a profit. So at this point the Passport is making them money.

What the passport is NOT doing is helping be more productive because a lot of people do not have them in their hands.

I wouldn't be surprised. I walked around my local mall and hit Telus, Rogers and Bell stores. All reps I spoke to said that the phone is selling very well and all of them only had positive things to say about them. Bell also told me that a BlackBerry rep would be at their store one day next week to provide further knowledge to the staff and customers.

That being said, none of them have a working demo yet and will not until next week. They did have them in stock though.

Chen is a conservative guy. There is no point in boasting. He most likely make it a big surprise during the next quarterly report. Remember the last time the ex-CEO mention they have sold a 1 million Z10s.
I actually think Thorsten probably wasn't talking out his **** with that initial million shipped. He didn't actually say "sold" and there was a lot of scrutiny at the time about this. More importantly, at that point, BlackBerry Z10 hadn't reached the US market. The countries where it launched were - at the time, friendlier ones ... Canada, the UK, UAE etc.

The write-down was reported in September of that year, after they had launched in the U.S. My hunch has always been that they stocked up the massive U.S. channels in particular in support of the launch and the people didn't come, resulting in a big inventory glut.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect they manufactured several million Z10s in the expectation of sell-through being high in multiple markets, resulting in a big channel backlog (particularly in the USA) and being forced to work through the inventory.

I also pretty strongly believe that there are more Z10s in the market than all other BlackBerry 10 devices, possibly combined. I do see the Q10 fairly often now as a corporate issued device in Toronto (see many every day) and see both far more than Z30 (seen three or four times), Q5 (seen twice) but still see Z10 the most.

To the topic at hand, I'd love to hear "1 million sold" from them, but I think it would be a stretch, given the limited distribution of it.

1 million. Not true. Here are the facts:

Telus has 7.9 million wireless subscribers.

1 million have not bought the Passport. That would be around 1 in 8 Telus subs. Have a look around - they would be everywhere.

I think you are misinterpreting what the OP said. It was 1 million global sales not Telus has sold 1 million. That would just be obviously wrong

Try this Telus has almost 8M subs, each gets replaces every 2 yrs, 4M.

Of thisr about 40% apple and same for android.

BlackBerry gets most of the rest, but say 10% or 400,000, approx 35,000 each month.

    So how many are Passports?

Rogers and Bell have similar subscriber numbers.

And first month should be higher.

Not hard to see 100,000 sold in Canada on the first month. USA sales will exceed Canada without carrier support. They are missing a lot of sales.

    HTC TOUCH, Nokia-N97, BlackBerry Torch 9800, Z10

Considering that I've been trying to buy one since the launch, missed the window on Amazon and Shopblackberry for initial stock, and still can't get one without paying $200 over retail (which I refuse to do) I'd say the probability of that sales number being real is quite high.

When the out-of-stock and "over-sticker price" markups continue like this beyond a few days it's usually a good indication that they're selling 'em faster than they can make 'em!

    Nope :P

Look - I'm not disputing numbers (I don't know, and I don't think anyone outside of sales at BlackBerry knows), but it's incredibly unlikely that an agent at a carrier store knows what the numbers are.

Well that's hard to say what type of agreement Telus and blackberry have since they were an stage on announcement day and they we're the only ones to have the passport the first week.

Plus I don't believe blackberry won't officially post sale numbers for maby first quarter, leaves a lot of speculation in the mean time i hope they sell 10 billion at the end of first quarter.

As much as we've come to know sales reps at cell stores no absolutely nothing, we should know any figure given to us by them means nothing. I've stood there listening to reps talk to other customers and the lies and wrong info spewed by them is astounding.
