I am going to order an OTG cable to connect a thumb drive to my passport.
Does the passport automatically detect the thumb drive via OTG usb cable? Or do I had to change settings or use a program?

It should just work and you should be able to see your USB files in the File Manager. There was an issue with 10.3.1 so make sure you are on at least 10.3.2.

For me, one of the most useful things about using the thumb drive is while I am a passenger while traveling in a car and need to send a file to work, I copy the file from my laptop, connect the thumb drive to the passport and then attach the file to an email. .Also, it is great when you are sitting in front of a client and need to immediately send the customer a file.

Why would you do that? You can transfer files to and from your passport wirelessly. No need for thumb drive.

I would think that the easiest way is to email the file from the laptop directly using the WiFi hotspot from the phone.
