Don't the majority of phone buyers now buy a two year contract and not really give a **** what a phone costs?
I don't.
Z30 user and lover.
No really, JC said that BB needs to sale 10 million devices yearly to be profitable.
Besides I don't think that Passport is for the masses, like the Curve was.
Why people keep speculating with a device is not even for sale yet!
Give it a rest already.
Exactly. Panic reaction from fanbois of other platforms. I am thinking, what possible benefits would such visionaries will have whatever happens to the product?

You have to think about the folks in the US. Chances are, we may not even get one carrier to pick this phone up and we have to buy it unlocked.
It's only a fail if you want to believe the Passport will sell millions and millions of devices. Not built for that and won't achieve it. As a premium PK device primarily geared toward enterprise it will do well its its niche category.
I know we have heard all before, what more can I say? ....pack your suitcases...travelling isnt cheap
My opinion is the passport should be priced under other premium devices, if BlackBerry wants to get the business users back on board then it should be an attractive price point.
I would even go as far to say it should be between 350 - 450 sim free, anything above 450 would simply be insane, blackberry has to get business users back on board, enterprise market will be ok but small to medium businesses will be a good strong place for them to get wide spread circulation and start bringing the faith back.
I'll still get one even if it is higher but that's because like everyone else here appreciate BB10 and can see clearly how it will work for my needs.

What is failure? A million devices in 3 months? 500,000 devices in a year? Generating $3M in net income in 3 months? Generating 10 million gross in 6 months? BB not achieving 2% market share by 2015. How are we judging the success or failure of this device? By awards won? Sale through? The device is targeted squarly at Enterprise, if they only sell 250K to enterprise users in the next quarter, but 1.5M to non-BES users, it a success then? The problem with all of this, is that unless BB details how they lost tens of millions making the device or their sales goals, we have no way to judge the success or failure of a device. Personally - most people thought the Storm was a total disaster. To this day, many inside and now expelled from BBRY think of the Storm as a success, not only from the engineering and design standpoint, but from both a sales and marketing standpoint.Does it need to sell more than the next gen Iphone or HTC One?
The reason I got a nexus 5 is because Tmobile wouldn't offer any blackberry devices and the unlocked prices of the blackberries were too high for me. Then you have a clearly blackberry former user with an android device. I'm sure there's a lot of people like me, wanting to get hands on a bb10 device. They are not in a position right now to be competing against the giants. It wouldn't work that way for them. They need to get the consumer attention somehow. Adding the google play store would help a lot. But that's not going to happen anytime soon, so the last option is competitive price. I'm sure this would grab some attention.

Anyhow you cut it, BlackBerry needs to be very cautious with their pricing, you can't price this phone in iPhone territory, those things are almost like investments with the second hand value they command. BlackBerry needs to build their credibility once again, it doesn't make a difference how cutting edge the passport is, it's a BlackBerry.......to most what that means is not positive!
They really have to get commercials aired

Apparently the iPhone and Galaxy are selling well at the same price, then why do you consider the Passport to be expensive? Seems to me like you're already claiming the Passport is inferior and not worth the same price?
I think BBRY is going for premium/prestige/niche business model for devices in the US and Foxconn designed cheaper ones for the emerging markets around the globe. I'm thinking it will actually cost MORE than the iPhone because they will want this to be an executive/business device that not everyone can afford. They will probably price the Classic more in line with having more volume in sales.
Don't care I'm buying it anyway lol I think it's an awesome device with good specs and sounds, apps won't be a problem anymore and the best part......it's different then all the main phones.....its hip to be square :D

Bait thread and I ain't gon bite.
STORM was a sales success... How much of that was due to the BOGO offers? How much of that was due to Verizon touting it as an iPhone Killer? How much was due to it being a BlackBerry? But in the end I think the STORM is the reason so many today HATE BlackBerry... that was a very sour Berry. It didn't come close to providing the iPhone experience, and Verizon quickly figured out that Android was a much better competitor than anything BlackBerry could do.
As to the Passport and pricing... I agree that if the Classic had come first and you didn't have so many year old devices, that the Passport would be viewed differently. But launching your 1st new device (I assume the Passport is launching before the Z3 LTE in many markets) in over a year and making it some super premium device... is very "risky" in the least. We don't know where the Passport will be priced.... but based on the PlayBook, Z10, Z3.... we have a pretty good idea.
I expect BlackBerry will make money on the Passport, but I'm not sure they will gain much in marketshare or even in mindshare.
But I do see the STORM and the Passport being closely related... one was a virtual touchscreen that required pressing the screen hard enough to "click it". And the other has a virtual keyboard, that stays in the way all the time....
2013 specs? Has BlackBerry officially announced the specs? Longer battery life by other brands? BlackBerry has no brand presence? I guess all the enterprises that are still embracing BlackBerry are smoking something. :)
If you are still keeping up with BlackBerry it is no longer a device only company; BlackBerry has gone back to its roots. And it's my understanding that John Chen initial intentions for the Passport is not for the mass market hence Foxconn is not manufacturing this phone (at least initially). This phone is for "prosumers and enterprises", those who can afford it. The Passport need not sell in truckloads to yield John Chen & co hefty profit margin.
On the other hand Z3 is for the mass market and has been priced accordingly. Also I believe Classic will be priced moderately too.
Finally, the Passport is unproven because it not out yet. Whether BlackBerry is struggling or not is irrelevant to the Passport being assessed as a premium phone or not. It is the quality and the functionality of a product that determines whether a product is deemed premium or not.
:D On a selfish note, I would rather the Passport be exclusive for those who are not so price sensitive and want a productivity beast. Those who are app conscious should get an Apple or Android as a supplement or move on.
PS: I can't wait to get my Passport. ;)
649 or more. You'll see..

I agree with that......
The reset... time will tell.
I hear what you're saying but I think with the higher specs and that it's being pushed as the next flagship, it'll be around the price of comparable iPhone / Samsung. It's a BlackBerry produced device (ie. not FoxConn like the Z3 and Classic) so the cost of manufacture is undoubtedly going to be higher. I'd be as happy as anyone to pay less but I'm not expecting that to happen. And who knows what their internal targets are in terms of sales on this device. It's the first of it's kind for BlackBerry, breaks the PKB paradigm, etc. Too many variables, makes my head hurt thinking about it. I have no idea if it's going to do well, but I know I'm pretty keen on one.
On the other hand, I'm hopeful that the Classic is priced reasonably. I think it's the one they're hoping for higher volume sales in Enterprise and if it's priced reasonably should do ok. Might even get a consumer bump in sales for the nostalgia factor. ;)
$600...
I'm not price sensitive. I buy all of my phones outright and generally change them every 6 months or so. Every device I've owned so far has been a top-tier device. I'm still not going to pay top-dollar for a Blackberry. I gave them a chance with the Z10. They are not getting another one from me. There will be many people with the same sentiment.
Craigslist will have some nice discounts on this device if Blackberry does not price it right ;)

I heard that the Passport is going to be highly radioactive, the back will be made from asbestos, and it will shout profanity at children. Whilst I don't have any actual EVIDENCE or basis for these conclusions, I think this is a massive fail and I can't believe that BlackBerry would betray their users like this, even in a manner that exists completely in my imagination. The Passport will therefore be a massive commercial failure, and we should discuss accordingly.

For me, after watching all the videos about Passport, the device is very compelling to me and I am more than willing to pay top dollars for it (in the range of $800 - $1000) only if I can conveniently brush aside the fact that the future of the app ecosystem is very uncertain. Native is more or less dead while Amazon app store integration helps, but it is pale compared to what Google Play has to offer and that nagging issue with Google Play Services. I am enjoying Android apps on the Z10 today using Snap, but I am very well aware that Snap while it is a very very nice workaround, it has a good chance of going away in the future.
IF THEY PRICE THIS AS HIGH AS AN iPHONE 6, PEOPLE WILL PICK THE iPHONE 6
---vomit---
With every new BlackBerry device upcoming I read exactly this saying and at least this time around I don't agree. Why would anyone who seriously considers a Passport with its keyboard and its weird form factor pick an iPhone 6? Again? Like every year? Which is just like any other phone on the planet an all touch slab?
I just want my boss phone back and am happy for the Passport to make BlackBerrys finally BlackBerrys again opposed to the competition: solid, wide, bold, boss-like. And even a 4.7" iPhone will have a smaller screen.
