The Passport Dock arrived and that is a very nice and heavy dock/charger. The only drawback is the insert works only if your Passport is naked. That is gonna be a problem for me because I have the OEM case on the passport (which I am really liking!).

THE DOCK: It has a non-movable rubber bottom. There is no worry of slippage from this unit. It stays secured to the desk or top of the bookcase, or night stand.
If the removable insert were to come in the size with the OEM case. That would be such a winner.
The dock charges at 1.8A and it came with a cord.

ah.. the dock charges at 1.8A, that means.. it uses the same charging amps as the PLAYBOOK charger, which confirms that the playbook's rapid charger is compatible. yeay!

I don't see the point in official docks that are open-ended, meaning they don't guide the phone into the exact place.
Just another thing that can fail over time, especially considering how flimsy micro-usb is compared to other types of connectors.

Didn't realize we can use the pb charger... wouldn't it cause overheating?

Smart design, like the old iPod docks. But the glossy black finish is disappointing.

Thanks for the post and the pics. Good to know about not being able to use a case with it.

Wonder if they will sell inserts (separately) for case applications?

Or, if they will be pairing future cases with matching inserts?

I would love a media dock, or a full docking station. USB, hdmi, charge.

Been using PB chargers only on last 5 BlackBerrys. 9900, Z10, Z30, Q10, and now Passport. It's the only chargers I buy/use unless I'm USB'd to the PC.

    Probably own 6 or 7.

Oh I didn't even think to ask about the capabilities of this dock...it only charges the phone? No hdmi, no slimport, no USB otg hub functionality...this could have been such a cool dock. Ugh.

How does the charging cable connect at the back of the dock? Is it micro-usb, or something else, like the PB dock?

If it's micro-usb, is it possible that one could attach a slimport HDMI adapter and see if that works? I realize you wouldn't be able to charge the phone at the same time, but at least it would be something.

Ultimately, the docks have always been created as a means of having the phone sitting up for those who charge their phone by their bedside, as opposed to using it for attaching the phone to a TV. That's not to say the choice couldn't be there, but that would involve more hardware development, more time to get the design right and more money to produce.

I realize there are those who do make use of BB10 and HDMI, but I get the feeling that BlackBerry found out that those who do are a small margin of the BB10 userbase, and they wanted to cut costs and make the device more streamlined by only having one port as well as still provide at least an option for accommodation for those who use the feature.

A good woodworker could mfg a slot at the correct angle and would accept the usb piece and the hardshell attached to the phone. I have turned bowl that is displayed on my mantle that is held by a similar slot for the outer rim of the bowl. An afternoon in the shop with a nice wood species would yield a very nice accessory.

They should be making these with removable inserts like the Z10 Kigigi dock did. You could have a case on the Z10 or not and use the dock. This looks like it has to be naked.

I disagree, we can do that else where. Keep the price low for a naked phone dock.

For the office, I won't use the OEM Dock, too many times to pull the OEM hard case off. So, I will use it at home for the overnight.

If a 'wonder worker' widened the slot, it would take away that nice gloss finish.

Just plugged my slimport HDMI adapter into the sync pod then connected to TV, docked my passport and low and behold it displays on TV and I can plug my charger into the slimport adapter and charge at the same time.

Bit of a workaround and not sure if there's a simpler way but it now functions just like my Z10 dock.
