Hey BlackBerry PP nation. Maybe it's just me,but how's everyone's experience with night time photos ? Mine = not impressed. Especially when shooting neon signs or red it seems. Attached photo for example. Washed out completely. Am I missing something ? A setting? Technique ? The quality is really awful.

Looking at the file, you shot in HDR mode, which explains the washed out look. It's seeing the dark night sky and the bright lights and attempting to make it all bright. The HDR mode in these phones is designed for shooting in daylight situations, not night. If you had turned it off, the picture would be much better.

Autofocus is definitely an issue, hopefully it's something they can fix with a software patch. When the subject is in focus the pictures are fantastic.

    Posted via CB10
If an object isn't in focus it doesn't matter what camera you have the photo will be bad. Did you update the software yet, I find the autofocus pretty much works seamlessly once you have the subject how you want it, hold, about a second later the green square in focus sign shows up and then boom take the shot. That's not much different than a SLR.

I've been an iPhone buff for awhile but hate itunes for a list of issues I have with there chained software. This is not a big deal in my opinion, an issue yes and hopefully software solvable but definitely not a phone killer.

Have you tried just waiting an extra second to ensure the green square box shows steady then take the shot? Based on the other thread about pictures with your passport, most of the photos are pretty good so as a DSLR shooter. You can have a $15,000 Nikon D810 but if your technique is just a little off, then it doesn't matter how much that camera was. I see it all the time when shooting with other people, many times its the people with the older cameras who get the better shots.

I don't think so, go take a look at the passports picture thread, most of them are pretty good.

Auto focus doesn't know what to do for close up shots. I have to move the phone out and slowly back in. Hopefully, BlackBerry improves it soon.

Here is a picture I took at an old winery.

So the passport camera works like a regular camera then for closeup (macro) shots because that's what I do with my DSLR. What are you expecting the camera to just know exactly where it's at right away?

Phone camera lens are very sensitive to finger print and smudges. Make sure the lens is well cleaned with a microfiber cloth.
Did you remove the factory protective film on the lens?
THIS!!! I've come to the same conclusion...something about the placement of the camera and my grip on the wide phone, I smudge the glass often. I'll get used to it...

I assume the camera will provide better shops with the 10.3.1 update. Isn't it also suppose to get the ability to record in 4K too?

Have to agree, not a bad camera, one of blackberry's best, but they are still quite a bit behind the competition on cameras.

    Posted via CB10
That's funny cause when I viewed you tube video on iphone6 vs Passport, one of the comparisons was with video and stills. both were sharp and focused but the passports colors were deeper and more colorful. So I disagree on being behind the competition.

The detail is good, I would try shooting this again sometime using all the different night setting and seeing what the results may be. The lights of BC Place and Telus world are a little bright in the shot so the camera sensor software may not be optimized yet for night shooting. Which is too bad because the hardware is certainly there right now. Software can change the dynamic range of the camera sensor and soften out the brightness of the lights. Or let's hope some developers update their sofware apps for this. I'll take a look at BB world and see if there's any.

I disagree as well, it's a business multimedia platform that has a good 'mobile' phone for general purposes as are all mobile phones, but does require a firmware solution ... by the looks of it... to increase its focus speed.

According to the BlackBerry Jobs Channel on BBM they hired someone for the position. Looks like they know they have camera issues and are working to solve them.

Right, it may not be a camera phone (like top notch), but on the other hand, pictures are more then fine. If you want a camera phone, buy Lumia 1020 or iPhone. I want a solid pictures and Passport is giving me that.
