During lunch yesterday, when one person saw my Passport, they said, "Is that a phablet?"
    Now that's a good question?
    Is it?
Did you even consider it in that category?

No it is not. In fact it falls quite short of being a phablet... At 4.5" diagonal inches of screen, its almost an inch short of phablet status. That's according to Wikipedia anyway

Technically correct but how many screens are 4.5 * 4.5 the screen real estate is pretty much the same as the z 30 just in a different form...to me it's a phablet

I would say that it is a phablet. In fact, that's how I discovered the existence of the Passport. Googled "phablet physical keyboard" and was so surprised and excited to find there was actually a phone that fit that description.

I don't think it is. I think it has carved out its own form factor and genre. It is completely unique.

I've been saying this too. There's really nothing like this device. The closest thing would be another BlackBerry.

To be quite honest, the past year I have rarely used my Macbook Pro or Air laptops since owning a z30 and now the passport. My smartphone has become my primary method of communication.

The only time I have used any of my laptops is when I have to do a training presentation at one of my clients sites which requires that I use PowerPoint.

when the first mock-ups of the device first leaked here on CB part of my skepticism was that it was a strange looking phone. until i saw the specs and then eventually held a demo unit in my hand then it hit me-- its a phablet . its like a short version of my Samsung Note but with a keyboard.

Blackberry is just marketing it as a "phone", perhaps to avoid any disgruntled attention from the Samsung/Android group-- after all, they allow their Android apps to run legitly on the BB ecosystem now.

but to answer your question, as a former owner of the first phablets-- yes the Passport fits more with the category of the tablet-smartphone hybrid devices. they're just being clever with the marketing.

Agreed. It's like a "small" computer complete with pkb which happens to be able to make phone calls, albeit a bit big for a phone these days .

The generally accepted definition of a "phablet" is a phone with a screen of 5.5".

I was once told that my BlackBerry was not a smartphone and not a regular phone. it's a BlackBerry - a class of devices onto itself.

It's definitely a phablet. The screen real estate is very high. But more importantly, it's very awkward and requires greater care during use. The way the Passport is used in comparison to a Q10 is night and day different.
