Are you doing anything at the same time? Any android app running at the same time may cause this. Are you using the original charger and cable. How long would it be on the charger before getting hot? Maybe the battery itself is coming to a time when it needs changing as the passport has been out now a number of years, I have been looking for one myself on line to replace my battery if and when it starts to give trouble. Hope you get it sorted.

It's normal for it to get hot while charging. Nothing to worry about.
