It was interesting how you had problem thread with only yourself in it. It gave me a chuckle when I thought about it though now I'm in the thread with you.

Well i restarted the phone..didnt work so then I used the BlackBerry virtual assistant to try and diagnose the keypad...went through all the tests and it just seemed to work.
I know there is some sensor to tell the lights when to turn on maybe it just needed a push start lol

I'm actually having this issue, in a pitch dark room the keyboard does not light up.
I had the same issue after a couple of days. Re-booted and it's been working fine since.

Done that several times, and the hard reboot with volume up and down buttons.
Guess I will give BlackBerry a call tomorrow.
I also have this issue...glad to know im not the only one..so just reset the device?

It does the opposite of what it should do, it brightens the screen in the dark and keyboard off.
This reminds me sensor issue from last year.

Same happened to me. Did a hard reboot (holding up and down volume buttons down at the same time until the BlackBerry name shows up).

I have a slightly different question regarding the backlight:
Mine is rather uneven, the outer qay and p,backspace,enter keys are pretty bright, while the middle section is rather dim. Is an uneven backlight a rather common "issue" or not?

This has only happened to me once. When I checked BBVE, it said the sensors were "unavailable." I restarted teh device and everything started working fine again. No issues since.

So BlackBerry said return to Rogers, obviously a hardware issue. Now I gotta wait again.

I can't get my device to hard reset. Holding volume up and down takes it into an endless boot cycle.

I have the opposite problem......the backlight on my white Bold 9900 keyboard insists on coming on when it is not needed! This is a big problem, because it washes out the letters on the keys, to the point that I can't read them. I have yet to find a solution to this maddening problem, and I really wish that there was an option to turn the auto function off....and to be able to manually turn the backlight on and off as needed. I am looking forward to buying the new Classic when it is available in white, and really hope that this backlight problem has been fixed. This is the only complaint/problem that I have had with my Bold 9900....and I love it, but the Classic is the upgrade I have been waiting for!
I too have the uneven backlight issue. Bright on numbers side and bright on return backspace side and dimmer in the middle. So this is common? I've done the hard reset and it makes no difference. Do I return it to ATT this week before 14 day warrenty expires, or do I one that is typical? Everything else on it is fine. Love the phone.
