Maybe the Classic is the phone you should get instead of the Passport.
The virtual keyboard follows the layout of the physical keyboard. It is impossible to place the "0" at the bottom in a more natural place because there's no room for it. Allowing the virtual keyboard to match the physical keyboard allows you to swipe down to show numbers and symbols, and instead of reaching up to tap a single alternate digit, you can press the corresponding physical button.

It isn't as good as the older qwerty keyboards due to missing punctuation, but it is a HUGE step up from onscreen keyboards, including swype.

Ditto, the onscreen keyboard is so brilliant!!! (though I've seen tons of complaints about it here)

Coming also from the Z30 had the same problems with you! In fact needs some time to get adapted to the new physical / virtual keyboard. It took me a week of extensive use to feel comfortable with it, however in two weeks time I was writing as fast as with my Z30.
Never regret my choice!

Everything on the virtual keyboard is mapped to a physical key on the keyboard. Since there is no fourth row on the keyboard, there isn't one on the virtual one, because if there was, then it wouldn't serve its purpose of having each virtual key mapped to a physical one.
The Passport isn't designed to be like the 9900. It's meant to provide the best of both worlds between the physical and virtual BB10 keyboards. I am incredibly impressed and satisfied with my experience thus far. I can type with almost 100% accuracy without looking at the keyboard. At first I thought the placement of the spacebar would screw me up, but it's essentially in the same spot where I always hit the spacebar on other BlackBerry phones relative to the bottom of the phone. Didn't take me long to adjust at all.

if you long for the 9900 feel. Get the Classic

The combination between keyboard and touch screen while you type was really frustrating at the beginning..
took me about 3 days to get used to it.. but to be honest..
If i compare it with typing on BB Bold.. the Bold will win when it comes to fast typing
But what makes me forgive the keyboard in the passport is the screen size and how its good for reading
I love mine. Though the weight. The size and the larger key spacing can be an issue I understand.
Probably not ideal for everyone.

Nope, it's great! I took to it after a day and after having it for five days now, I can confidently say I can write a novel with it. That's how efficient, comfortable and intuitive the keyboard is. And I'm coming from a Q10. The virtual keyboard is just so intelligent it just seems to know every time what I'm going to type next. Don't think I miss the shift key at all, and the fact that the keyboard's so spread out makes you accurate while typing. Yep, this is the future of keyboard.
And, were it not for the crashing Instagram and lazy camera, I'd have said this was THE most perfect phone.
P.S. This was sent from my Passport :-D
I definitely second that!
And there is another important thing why some people might complain about the passport's keyboard and other people really loves it.
It's about how we use our languages...
Especially in German we have many words that are upper case... Many people though don't really care about proper grammar and they'd write everything lower case.
And also, if you have to use a lot of numbers and special characters in an email, I'd bet almost everybody would be faster on the e.g. Classic keyboard...
It slows down a lot if you have to switch between numbers, special character and lower/UPPER case...
I know a lot of people that don't care about punctuation and words that actually have to be upper case! Those people definitely don't have a problem with the new passport keyboard...
Written with the great passport although I do have also a Classic here right now. The passport screen is just amazing. But definitely would love to have the classic keyboard with the passport...and the touch sensitive keyboard is great too!
Cheers, Daniel
I'm going to echo much of the sentiment expressed in this thread. You need at least two weeks with the device before you start truly enjoying the Passport experience. I received my device the day before Thanksgiving. I think I was overly determined to not like the device. The first week was a bit rough. But by my second Friday of owning the device, my dislike with the awkwardness of it was replaced by a strong like. As of today, I can say with full certainty that I love my Passport.
The keyboard will become less stiff as yu continue to use the device. I did find the lack of a physical shift key annoying, but to capitalize a letter, you can just hold the letter a bit longer. In addition, with the more you use the device, hitting shift will become second nature. The virtual keyboard definitely is the biggest drawback to the device. Using the virtual keyboard does get better, however, I can say it doesn't decrease in awkwardness nearly as quickly as the rest of the typing experience.
I hope you're able to enjoy the Passport; however, more importantly, I hope that whichever device you end up sticking with is what is best for you.
Took me three weeks. I'm faster now than I ever was on my q10. Takes time. Be patient.

Z30 to Passport here. Took me a good month to get used to the keyboard. Now I love it.

I'm one full day in and I love it.

I don't own a Passport (nor am I looking to buy one -- I prefer all-touch), but I tried a live one in a Telus store and -- surprising even to myself -- I found no problem with the virtual keys or the 3 rows. It was very weird. I was certain that -- AT LEAST the spacebar on the third row -- would be difficult to use for me. But there I was, hitting the spacebar properly (not below it) and jumping up to the virtual row without even thinking about it. Again -- I was very very surprised.
My last keyboard phone was the 9810 (Torch 2)... maybe that had something to do with it.
Its fascinating how some people need more time and others pick it up immediately. Everyone seems to have a very different experience with it.
The problem is that there are no dimples on the keys, unlike the other BlackBerry keyboards
You get used to it but it can be tricky at first!
It does take some time to get used to because of its layout. 3 rows? Huh? And then there's a virtual fourth row on top?
In the end a lot of thought went into it. It works. However, you have to use it to get used to it;
-4th (virtual) row has all elements for continuous typical writing
-Flicking words is amazing and really helpful, it certainly helps typing speed
-swiping down to use one-time characters is also something to learn if you want to be fast
-password fields automatically place a 5th row with numbers. This is great!
-'0' ended up in an odd place, it's a trade off I've learned to live with.
I would have adjusted more easily with this keyboard if the phone wasn't so awkward to hold & type on. I'm three months in and I have adapted but not adjusted. I don't really care for the typing experience on the PP. I'll be switching to the Classic soon.
