I don't think so. If passport is connected to USB port in PC or laptop then it will charge no more than 500mA.

Likely the cable got damaged. My pad had quite thin cable prone to physical damage.

    Yes, 500mA; but it's constant! It doesn't jump from 300mA to 500mA or 500mA to 800mA.

The cheap Qi charging accessory is rated at 800-1000mA (which means it fluctuates). This is what's driving the Passport to not recognize the charger and it happens on every smartphone (iPhones will tell you that the charging accessory is not recognized an may not be supported).

To make it perfectly clear, you need an accessory that provides a constant current anywhere from 500mA (slow trickle charge and will take a very long time to charge) to 1300mA (max supported charging current). Alternatively you can also use a 2100mA charger like that of most tablets to charge even faster, but this degrades the battery life.

    Keyword here: Constant

How many charging coils do you have on the charging pad? When I used a single coil charger it wouldn't charge through my at&t passport body glove case. But when I switched to a 3 coil charger pad it charged fine. Since you said you had a case between the pad and the charging coil, it might interfere. Try charging without the case.

Please point out where you found these 680mA OEM Passport chargers; because BlackBerry doesn't even sell them online.

By using a charger that's rated higher than the one that came with the Passport, the battery will slowly hold less and less of a full charge due to the cells degrading (mostly due to heat), most people won't notice. This however because most won't own the device for much more than 1 or 2 years.

does a 3 coil qi pad drive more current to the device, or does it simply make it easier to center it ??

    That's a Q10 charger, not a Passport charger.

As far as I know, three coils charge better and also helps in that you don't have to fiddle around with the position so much.

I'm not really sure about the current difference between a single and three coil charger so if anyone knows better about this, please let us know. It might help with this dilemma.

Those things are hacky, never quite work right. Just get the AT&T Passport if you really want wireless charging, it works great.

Go re-read the frequency sticky thread, you posted in it. You'll be fine with the AT&T version. Sell yours on Swappa or in the marketplace.

I have the AT&T passport but I am interested in how this works out. If this turns out well I might do the same thing for my other phones.

I have the Nokia fat boy pillow wireless charger and also charges well.

It lacks one band that's pretty much irrelevant anyways. So you'll be fine.

Only thing is that this AT&T Passport will come locked, so you'll have to get it unlocked in order to use it with other carriers.

Pretty much a non-issue now too. If you're not an AT&t customer, they'll unlock it for free. I immediately opened the box and initiated the process. Took 3 days, but it's unlocked!

    Was that gentleman you, yhamaie-san?

Seriously though, from the translation it didn't seem like an extremely difficult modification. As a native Japanese reader, would you agree?
