Good evening gents, freind of mine just purchased an AT&T Passport and contacted AT&T for the unlock code. He has run through the sequence with the unlock code and the phone times out with the Canadian Carrier sim card in it. What could be causing this? If the phone was never activated, would that cause this behaviour? Thanks in advance,

Apparently it says unlocked. Yet times out when trying to finish the unlock code procedure and will not read the Canadian sim card.

PS - would never being activated on AT&T cause an issue when trying to unlock?

    This is what is displayed:

Network subset unlocked, service provider unlocked.

Also when he inserted the sim it gives the following notification: "Sim card blocked. The device is network locked. Contact your service provider".

AT&T sent him via email that the unlock request was approved and they emailed him the code.

Has anyone activating an AT&T Passport on a Canadian Carrier? Seems strange!

Maybe a silly observation but he did reboot the device after going through the unlock process yes?

Let your “friend” know that it’s AT&T way of being anti-Canadian for our President through back channels.

Seriously though, did you try first activation on the AT&T network with a prepaid SIM card? Would that be necessary?

If the device were truly unlocked and ready for ANY sim card there would be 3 listings under the SIM Card in Settings and would appear this way:

    Network
    Unlocked

    Network subset
    Unlocked

    Service Provider
    Unlocked

So it would seem that his/her device is still locked to AT&T.

I'm surprised an unlock code was even provided by AT&T. They are very particular about unlock codes.

They require the device to have been activated on AT&T for at least 60 days. If it was never activated, that's why I'm surprised a code was given at all.

Also, AT&T seems to purge old IMEIs from their database after just a year or so of inactivity. That throws the process into a different level.

Well an update, the phone has been activated before on AT&T. Seems like a bad card reader perhaps. I believe he is sending it back. Thanks for all the help.
