Amazing, isn't it? My teenage son went with me to the grocery store last week when he spotted a large, hairy man sporting a full a$$crack.. and he wanted to snap a pic for posterity. Thankfully I was in the next isle over when he clicked the button because just about everyone in the store heard it, including the intended target. I wish I could say his effort was worth it but the pic was too blurry to be of any use.

I can see your frustration, taking pictures of @ss cracks is quite risky when the camera shutter sound plays. Live and learn I guess. Just be glad the person you were photographing didn't take the phone and place it directly into said @ss crack.

What were you and your son going to do with the @ss crack image(s)?

Get a life, all you haters on this thread. Seriously. My comment was meant to be funny. It WAS funny at the time and snapping pics of disgusting adults with plumber's cracks are what kids do these days. Good grief.

some people have legit excuses for a silent camera, say in a library or a crime scene... your reasoning is just purely for entertainment and to ridicule, which is not only offensive but unethical and immoral.

you must be thinking your passport sucks now because "i cant take silent photos of a man's hairy behind without going into silent profile". Grow up.

you are the disgusting person, not the man with the hairy crack. I'm surprised he didnt turn around and break your phone or an arm.

OK guys... before you say that BlackBerry failed and that it's stupid that you can't turn off the shutter sound without muting the entire phone, and that outside Canada we should be able to have the option, here is some facts:

-to my knowledge, there is a law in USA, Canada and Japan that makes the shutter sound mandatory

-forcing people to silence the entire phone is not stupid! It's smart cause it allows people a way to have the shutter sound off... but also prevents people from leaving it off all the time

-every other phone has the option? Maybe you should pick up a phone that's not a BlackBerry once in a while

You have to mute the phone completely for this. Incredible.
I know, right? What kind of phone manufacturer would not let you just turn off the camera sound?

If I remember right, this has been brought up before. Someone posted it was illegal in Canada to turn off the shutter sound. BlackBerry being a Canadian company would of course comply with this law. They gave those of us not living in Canada the option to shut it off.
No, this is not true. It's not illegal to silence the camera shutter in Canada and in fact I can silence it when my Notifications are set to Silent. This is not the case in all countries, however, and BlackBerry overrides this when your phone is in a country where the shutter sound must always be on. I would also like the option to always have the shutter sound off and not have to worry about changing notification settings.

    Lol!

Some people are just assuming that when you can't do something on a BlackBerry, it's possible on other phones!

In Japan, when you put the iPhone in silent, the shutter sound still plays.

So once something isn't illegal that makes it ok to do? Is that what you're teaching your son? It's attitudes like that that empower governments around the world to enact more and more laws in an attempt to legislate almost all aspects of our lives and behaviour. Pretty soon there will be little to no freedom if we continue along this path. In my opinion, with freedom comes responsibility and when freedom is abused, like anything else there can be negative consequences.

Inside of a store is not a public place, it is private property.
Depending on the laws that cover that store's location, such a "photo op" could land one in prison under voyeurism laws. I'm sure your teen would not like to go through life branded as a sex criminal.
As for why does BlackBerry, or any other phone manufacture enable the camera sounds by default is to prevent legal liability:
    • As in your teen's example; Let us say the BlackBerry device did have a mute for camera sound only built in, laws in your area were quite heavy on voyeurism, your teen is convicted as a sex criminal, registered as such for life, AND you decide to sue BlackBerry over it all because of camera was mutable.

That is why it is up to the end user to mute the camera sounds.

It should be illegal. But unfortunately it apparently isn't in the USA. Read this recent news of a man acquitted of taking pictures of a teen under her skirt.

Oregon judge: taking photos up girl's skirt not illegal

    Posted via CB10
This is case where the local laws were insufficiently worded or the prosecutors were not knowledgeable enough to make a case under laws that would be broken by the perps actions.
Maybe Oregon doesn't have a specific "up skirt" law, but I'm sure they have a law covering the production of child porn.
Other areas of the USA are not so lacking, the same action taken in Central Florida would have resulted in a bad ended for the perp.

Always amusing how these 'camera sound' threads turn into nothing but an argument. The option is there to shut it off via putting your phone on silent or downloading third-party apps. As for legality, it varies by country and region and BlackBerry's implementation is suitable for most to get it a passing grade and not run into legal issues. Get over it, sheesh.

It's in the camera menu. Many many android phones have had this option for a long time yet I don't see those companies being chased down for having it available.

That would make sense.. I live in Germany and I never had this problem before installing this leak (10.3.1.2072) - maybe it's a leak from US/Can/JP and the settings on it are defaulted to camera-sound. Hopefully it'll go away with the installation of the official OS.

I haven't tried this, but notification profiles are a lot more flexible with 10.3.1. The camera sound is off on many of these profiles. Maybe it's possible to modify a profile to be exactly like "Normal" in every way except for the camera sound.

I have my phone in a modified phone calls only mode and it works for me.

There is no law about a camera shutter sound in the US. And by turning the profile to a silent mode it turns off the camera sound. So why not have a toggle for the camera app? There's no logical reason. The more customization options the better.

In any case, the camera sound issue is way better than it was on my 9810. There was no really good way to silence the sound on that phone. A few apps but they really sucked.
