I wanted to do a reset on the Passport so went to Security --> Wipe but it has been nearly 20 minutes and the phone is still stock on a black screen with a chip shown!

    How long should it take?

Don't worry, it takes quite a bit of time. I don't remember exactly how long, but it usually takes more than 20 minutes.

I think last time time when I did on mine, it took me about 45 minutes. I just kept it on charger while wiping and walked away doing something else. Be patient you will get there.

That's insane. Not ideal for a retail environment.

Then people here wonder why BlackBerry is mocked in retail.

As I understand it a BlackBerry device wipe involves writing to all the disk to erase all the data. Just reformatting the internal storage does not completely wipe it. It will take a long time.

Be patient as it can take between 45min to 90min depending on how much info needs to be eradicated!

It took my Q10 three hours. I started to think the phone crashed. Keep the faith, it will finish eventually.

And no other phone in the industry is as good at security.

You really want your old phone getting sold with ALL your personal info on it?

I had used the phone for close to two years with multiple accounts associated with it. I'd prefer it take three hours instead of three seconds.

As a result of a security wipe that takes 3 minutes instead of 3 hours? And can that really happen?

Think of it as a book, a quick wipe would erase the index and leave all the text, a Black Berry wipe erases all the text as well

Passport or Z10, whichever is nearest

The big agencies will do what they wish. Just quite making it easy for any two bit hood who wants to buy a used phone and revive every email attachment that was ever cached. Not to mention any password keeper info or browser caches.

    Do a test.

Erase "delete" a usb memory stick ... then send it to me without wiping it.

Any device that writes zeros to its storage will take just as long with the same amount of storage space.

This is not the weak "reset to factory settings" for consumers that you find in iOS. A BlackBerry Security Wipe meets the highest security standards in the world.

BlackBerrys are not made for retail first, they are serious tools first and toys second.

We're not talking about memory sticks. We're talking about smartphones.

I'm sure there's a forum for erasing memory sticks somewhere.

About half an hour for me with the PP with virtually nothing. Guess that the time depends on what's currently on the device because as far as I know, BB overwrite existing data with zero data, not just delete it.

The technology they use to permanently store data is the same. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.
