How do I edit my contacts in android priv?
    Remove duplicates, old contacts, etc.
Can I make a text file out of it, then edit and reload?

Obviously, you can do it manually, one by one, on the phone. I've occasionally cleaned them up that way.

I've not investigated exporting them from the phone. But if you sync with Google or other service they might have import/export functions that allow desktop editing. I think Google does.

Any contacts synced with Google are available in Google Contacts (part of Gmail) and there is a contact merge function. Also, you can easily edit on the desktop (or anywhere else you access Gmail) and the changes will appear on your phone automatically. They are also backed up and can be restored on a new phone simply by logging in on it.
