How do I add calendar events to a non primary calendar?

I have three calendars on my device. My primary calendar is the work calendar, after that my Gmail, and then my device. This morning I was trying to add a calendar event to my Gmail calendar, but every time I select new event, the only calendar I can choose is my work calendar. If I swap defaults, I can then use the Gmail calendar, but not any others. How the heck do I use multiple calendars or is this another bug?

Caveat: This works on 10.3, but I can't recall if its the same on 10.2.1.xxxx.
Create a new event, tap on the downward-pointing arrow beside the free/notification and select a calendar.
