not at all too highly priced - am waiting to see what the UK price will be as we usually pay a huge uplift compared with US prices and then have 20% sales tax on top (which business can reclaim)

I know it... on day one, the Q10 costed 860 euros... the price fell naturally over time... I bought it on cotract from my provider... 2 months later, it was priced 650 on Amazon. But the device was much more expensive at the beginning. This is true!

Keep in mind those prices were from shady ebay sellers offering the Q10 well over a week prior german release. I got mine from Alternate.de the very day they recieved their first stock, and they were along the first shops carrying the Q10, and paid 629 EUR for it. Price dropped rather fast and "normalized" within 4 weeks you could get the Q10 for well under 600 EUR.

Hopefully not double-typed with my Q10

I'll remember that... who knows, if my carrier does not provide the passport on upgrade

Agreed. In my neck of the woods, a brand new, unlocked Galaxy Note 3 is selling for $669CDN. The new iPhone 6 alone is going for $749CDN via the Apple Store. So yeah, $599 for a phone as capable as the Passport appears to be is actually an excellent and totally fair price. At that price, I can see BlackBerry doing fairly well with the Passport in terms of sales, even though most of those sales will be found going to business/enterprise/health care types... and a few consumers who recognize a good smartphone when they see one.

This is obviously my opinion but I don't think they are going to sell enough for it to matter.

95% of the worlds using touch screen(true touch screen, no keyboard) and most of them wouldn't go back to Qwerty. 4% of the remaining 5 won't leave BBOS and the other 1% already has BB10.

i think at 599 some ppl who wouldn't have bought it at say 749 might give it a shot.i think 599 is a fair price
I'm one of those people, and I already know I like BB10. But I would not have paid $749 for the Passport. I'll pay $599 and feel that I got good value for my money (assuming the thing works). I don't expect BlackBerry to launch its most ambitious new phone in years at fire sale prices.

If even 10% of former PKB users were willing to use one again, it would remain true that "most" VKB users "wouldn't go back" but the Passport would still gain a large number of users.

We can't assume that all of those who left BlackBerry for VKB devices did so because they didn't like the PKB. We also can't assume that they're all completely satisfied with the VKB. Those who left because of apps may not come back for a long time, if ever. Those who left for larger screens and a more modern OS may be very interested in the Passport.

Finally, the smartphone market is still growing, as new users enter the market. To them, the PKB will be a novelty, not nostalgia. Curiosity will pull some of them in. Some people simply like to stand out from the crowd, and the unusual design of the Passport will appeal to them, too.

It's anyone's guess whether this will amount to enough sales to "matter", but I think the game's wide open at this point. I'm not a spec person, but the Passport has specs that are good enough to get the attention of the tech press; it has a design that has had people talking for a couple of months already; it has the Amazon app store, which although not a true solution to the app gap is still progress; and it has a competitive price tag, compared to other cutting-edge smartphones.

I have the counter opinion, I believe there are many qwerty hold outs who until the passport didn't have enough reason to upgrade.

Also 1/3 of my group of 30 friends mentioned that they would switch to a large screen qwerty if there was one in the market.

5 including me are preordering the passport. The others are gonna wait and see.

Most of my friends are on apple, followed by blackberry 10 and then android.

I tought it was going to be more... It's a flagship phone like iphone, HTC One, GS5, but a bit cheaper.

Making a phone with that huge screen and that touch sensitive keyboard won't be cheap, Blackberry has to make money

No, seems to be the right spot to me. I'd be happier paying less but I think it would undervalue the tech, particularly when there is a new feature like the swipe keyboard...assuming functional usability

I dunno...I think $499 would have been the "sweet spot". But time will tell.

    Thoughts?

Not Fours Years But A Lifetime
i am clearly in the minority as i too agree that $600 is high for the passport. $500 IMO would make it more of a steal and could potentially sway others over to BB but at $600, an extra $20 - $40 will get you whatever premium Android phone is available.

Not in the States but South America, the carriers here are sh..., phones are very expensive in corporates accounts, but comparing prices with unlocked phones here, it will be like U$800 for a S5 and U$1000 or more for the Iphone 6+, if you get here a Passport for U$700 it should be a very good price.

In the overall marketplace physical keyboards on device are a very small percentage of users... remember BB said they need to sell roughly 10 million handset per year which isn't many in the grand scheme of things when you look at Apple selling 4 million units in one day and Samsung selling between 2-3 million within a week when the launch a device.

It's a high end device. Compare it to others on the market iPhone 6 16GB ($650), HTC One M8 ($670), Samsung Galaxy S5 ($650), Samsung Galaxy Note 4 ($826). I think $599 is a good price.
