Affordable means different things to different people. BlackBerry most likely ran the numbers and came to the conclusion that there will be enough people willing to pay the $599 for them to make a profit on the batches of BlackBerry Passport devices that they produced.

If "affordable" is your priority then the Z20 should be great for you.

I'm guessing they are selling to enterprise customers, so its priced for businesses. Gives them some wriggle room if they have large orders to drop price, but to sell one here and there to individuals and sell at a low price cant see it happening.
I'm skeptical that the Passport will sell in large volumes to Enterprise customers. Even large corporations try to keep things affordable, so in most cases you might see a REALLY large customer order a couple thousand budget phones (think Z10 or even Q5), and then MAYBE 5-10% of the order will be premium phones like the Passport.

Not saying there won't be any corporate sales, but before BB10 9 out 10 BlackBerry phones in our organization were Curves, with just the very odd Bold scattered in there for senior management and executives.

It's actually a little lower than I was expecting. Another "can't wait", even though I'm loving my Z30.

Lower than I expected. Good test case. BlackBerry is putting out a PKB phone, with high specs, and at a high mid range level price. If folks don't buy, to me it will be a good sign they are probably getting out of devices.

But I hope it sells like hot cakes. Hard to tell. Good arguments can be made both ways.

$599 seems fair for a device of this stature. I was expecting a lot higher to be honest. Compared to an iphone this is a steal.

When you get it with a contract, you won't pay that much!

BlackBerry can't continue to exist, if its "fans"/supporters aren't willing to pay for its quality phones!

I think the price is fine. I think the people who are going to buy the device are on this site and will pay. They can't mass produce to lower cost.

If that would be true no company in the world would buy iphones or Galaxy phones.

Considering it is less expensive than the iPhone 6 & 6+ and the new Samsung it is going to get people to take a look. Ok if your all about the app's then this may not be the phone for you. BB10 has come a long way and is only going to keep getting better. Plus the spec's are right up there with everyone else if not better. It is a killer phone for the price. With some good marketing the Passport & Classic will turn some heads.Nice move on Mr. Chen's part.. Rocking 24-7 with my Z10 & 16GB PlayBook

I know it... on day one, the Q10 costed 860 euros... the price fell naturally over time... I bought it on cotract from my provider... 2 months later, it was priced 650 on Amazon. But the device was much more expensive at the beginning. This is true!

    i confirm too.
And that's the reason why i'm worried about the difference between Chen's 599$ media buzz and how much a french network (FNAC) is pricing it (669.90 Euro=860$) BlackBerry Passport, Noir - Smartphone sous Blackberry OS - Fnac.com
I wanted the Q10 but waited because found its price indecent (was around 750 Euro at that time if i remember well).
After a few months i bought it second hand at around 370Euro on Ebay (UK seller).

$599 is a really good price as thats only 365.55 British pounds !, but I don't think it will stay at that price at all due to tax. So I am expecting it to be around 450-500 mark considering there is nothing like it in the market, But if it were to come at 360-370 I would just go out and buy it sim free as that is the deal of the year !

I guess we will all know by tomorrow !

I don't think the price is too high. Actually it is cheaper than I expected. Let's compare it to other launch prices of a variety of phones, all prices in EUR:
    BlackBerry Z10 - 620
    BlackBerry Q10 - 630
    Samsung S4 - 640
    Samsung S5 - 670
    Samsung Note 3 - 680
    HTC One M8 - 650
    Apple iPhone 6 16GB - 700
    Apple iPhone 6+ 64GB - 900
    BlackBerry Z30 - 600
    Sony Xperia Z3 - 650
    Samsung Note 4 - 700

Sure, the Passport "just" has a Snapdragon 800 SoC, while other current flagships offer newer models like 801 or 805. However it still comes with 3 gigs of RAM which is top of the line, the 32 gigs of memory ain't too bad either. Last but not least it sports that innovative keyboard plus a pretty high-resolution display @ 1440x1440, not to mention (I hope!) great build quality.
I even think lowering the price wouldn't make that phone any more attractive for the whole market. I'd even state as much if they would price it at 299 it still won't suddenly skyrocket in terms of sales.

Edit: Also keep in mind you should never do any 1:1 curreny conversations when it comes to prices. Most of the time when a product launches in the US for 599 Dollars, here in Germany it doesn't sell for 466 EUR around here, but rather 599 too. Vice versa launching a product in Germany for 549 EUR translates to a 705 USD pricetag in the states.

Hopefully not double-typed with my Q10
