Install BlackBerry Virtual Expert (BBVE) from BlackBerry World. It's made by BlackBerry and is free.
Use it to test the Proximity Sensor:

• Launch BlackBerry Virtual Expert (BBVE)
• Tap Choose A Test
• Select Proximity Sensor and follow the instructions.

If Fail, then there is an issue with either the OS or hardware.

• Try rebooting the device, if still an issue try reloading the OS.
• If still an issue, seek repair or warranty.

Are you in bed when it happened? The screen will only turn off if it detects you are near AND it's held vertically. Oddly enough I guess it's because it doesn't want to turn off in case you're clicking something on the screen
