IS it actually Qi? Because I was pretty sure that BB is a member of PMA as well.

ETA: BlackBerry definitely IS a PMA member. I think there's a decent chance that if a Passport variant supports wireless charging, it will be of the PMA variety. The good news there is that the charging mats that are being deployed in Starbucks are PMA-compatible.

This piqued my curiosity.

My curiosity led me to a manufacturer's site that builds a wireless charging component that supports both standards. That would be incredibly cool if the Passport's wireless charging could support both Qi and PMA.

Hmm, interesting. They did stock Fatboys and some other Nokia Qi charging products as late as May: Deal Alert: Nokia Fatboy charging pillow on sale at AT&T for only $5 | Android Central , but now it seems like that may have been a clearance sale...

If carriers can influence OEMs to such a degree where the former dictates standards, I wonder if they're rampantly into baseband locking too (I'm looking at you, Verizon...) Disturbing.

Back in June, Starbucks announced they were going to have Duracell Powermats in all stores to provide wireless charging. Powermats use PMA. IIRC, AT&T provides the free wifi in Starbucks. There may be a weak connection there.
