Best guess is you are ok for 2016.
Beyond 2016 does not look promising.

That's the million dollar question right now. No more bb10 devices will be coming out next year which doesn't bode well but as usual Chen and BlackBerry are being very vague about the long term future.
If you've just got it I would say you're going to get your monies worth out of the device before you wish you hadn't so not to worry.

Functionally, I believe we have os for more 5 years, but we need updates to security, to apps, and I think the developers don't continue to waste time developing for this os, unfortunately!
I buy my first BlackBerry last month, I just don't want regret my decision.

If BlackBerry 10 is working for you now, why would it suddenly not? I'd say you could easily use BlackBerry 10 for a couple years or more. Depends on how long your hardware lasts I guess. This is especially true for those people who's app needs are met by BlackBerry World and 'side loading' - which isn't really 'side loading' any more...

I just don't see how it would become suddenly useless if it's current state is useful.

After the two planned updates for this year, I'm sure it will be perfectly fine for those who currently enjoy it, for a long time to come.

Plus, there are plenty of cheap replacement parts for BlackBerry 10 devices.

There's people who are still using legacy BlackBerry devices! Lots of them too...

Now that's some serious dedication. I could never go back to those days, not a chance. They were awesome a few years ago, but no longer. Now I'm rambling.

I've seen people using bold 9900 and I swear I may have saw a curve 8300 series...

I think these are users who's just comfortable with the function of the phone and keyboard.

I'm coming up to a year with my red passport. I love it. I may consider buying the SE as a back up if it's on sale.

The latest update has my phone running smooth and doing everything I need it to. As long as they still update for security and android apps run as well as they currently do I can see myself using the Passport for the next few years.

No one knows for sure OP. One could read the signs with no bb10 phone being released in 2016, but no one knows what they are really doing or planning in Waterloo. The only thing we can do is hope that BlackBerry doesn't completely abandon the OS that we, even though we are a small segment, use. Maybe they come out with a bb10 Priv or something along those lines to keep costs down. I don't know. In the meantime, rock your BB10 phones. I will ride with BB10 as long as I can. My two device set up will keep the train rolling.

The fact that you would choose a Leap today, among the other offerings out there, would make me comfortable to say that you will remain satisfied throughout the life of the device.

You appreciate its excellent communications abilities, are not huge into apps, and enjoy being different. That won't change.

My only concern is that as time goes by if the Android runtime is not update many Android will not support 4.3. Already experiencing this issue with apps requiring 4.4.

That is a problem, yes. It's made worse that more and more Android apps make use of Google Play Services too - even my banking app does now. At least Cobalt has provided some workarounds for the latter.

You have to take the good with the bad.

One can only hope that BlackBerry will continue with BB10 for a market that wants special functionality and top security. Like say, the CIA, Government Officials, business people. If they want to serve a niche market like that, it has a chance of survival.

Let's answer that in business perspective, as long as BB10 is still profitable, BlackBerry will continue to support it. But again, the 'continual support' should still make them profitable... otherwise, what's the purpose of maintaining it?

42 days - give or take.

If BlackBerry wants to survive in this market, it has to transform itself to a more consumer friendly mind.
