Some people can get by, sure. But not enough to make a 3rd ecosystem even remotely viable.

With WhatsApp for example, can you tap outside the Google Play warning box like you can on BB10?
Never tried on a real Android device. But it would prevent backups to Google Drive. It's just not worth the huge hassle.
That why I asked earlier what the GoogleVurse would look like if all apps backed up like telegram independently. Things could loom much different.
This is why I am happy with my Passport ;)
Nice balance

You want all apps to have their own cloud servers to back up data?
I'll trust Google's firewalls before I trust dozens of individual app vendors.
True enough. I forgot to consider that.
Perhaps a feature to backup settings and data locally would be nice then. Not all apps provide this option
Negotiating with a friend to buy back my old Passport OG for $125 CND that I used as a backup to my current Passport OG.
Can one have too many Passports?

Hahaha! Yes!

Makes no sense to have two OG Passports
Might as well grab yourself an SE or Red
Both my Passport devices work fine in 2020. No smoke, no blank screen of doom or strange messages prescribing disconnection of service. The BlackBerry doom mongers were wrong; what a surprise.

Makes sense when you have extra screen/digitizer and extra (new) keyboard, a slew of extra cases and the price of $125 ;)

Actually, I can see the benefit of having the backup being the same ... one set of cases/holsters. Let’s face it, accessories specific to the Passport aren’t as readily available.
Eh, there are enough to get the job done.
Besides, the Passport is a device to use without a case.
Rubbery back with decent grip.
Also, the OG, red and white passport have identical parts
Yeah but I know the pristine shape this one is in. Also the ones I see in different colors are asking $200-$300 or more still. For my needs I don't think so. I have a Oneplus 3T as a backup if I need it and this Passport will also be a backup to my disturbing nostalgic addiction.

WHATSAPP WITH DARK MODE!. Check my other thread out!

Except it does seem to do the said job...
Are you still having issues saint300?

Although it has a number of bugs, it does. Certainly much better than the native app.
No issues at all!
I also have two Passports, one is the OG and the other the SE. Then again, in my case it may not make much sense really having these two, as most parts are not interchangeable. But for that, I also have a spare parts-only OG, well...for my running OG. I think the reason why I keep these two almost identical devices is the feeling of familiarity, knowing that when I need to go to the backup device, everything will be identical...I don't know really....have considered getting again a Classic, or a Keyone (well, that would be a first!), but somehow I feel really comfortable with this arrangement for now.
Still using mine

I've gotta get me one of those for my collection. I've always liked the rounded corners of the AT&T Passport.
You also have the white Classic... another device that I'd love to add to my fleet!
Be care full with that I think that AT&T version does not have as many radio bands as the Canadian or international square-pants models ;)
