I just thought, that it would be great to extrapolate number of passports sold by now. So, here's the deal:

ANYONE, who bought it just after release/release date - can you post two things:
    a) Date of Production
    b) Serial Number? (at least some of it)

I have bought mine on Saturday. Still waiting for it to arrive. Bought from Amazon.com - therefore it is somewhere over Atlantic at the moment

Idea is - the serial numbers should follow each other. Therefore - it would be possible to track when your passport was built and what was it's number.

As soon as I will get mine (probably next week?) - we can compare build dates and serial numbers. This would indicate (well - with some margin on accuracy) - how many passports have been sold/produced.

no no, it shouldn't be the full Serial.

lets say - you number is 125, produed mid september etc.
I (when receive) or anyone else say - well, mine is 233567 build date 04/11/2014

so basically we'll know that >200k passports sold

well, at least my theory. as my Z10 has strange ID number, so it might be not the case and we will be unable to know approximate number of sold passports

How on earth do you figure that, the amounts sold based on build date? How many in a lot produced today, same day of work or week of a month in May vs June?!

BlackBerry - Accept no substitute. Period!

build date is on the box, 6 figures.
    like 061114

My idea is, that the serial number should go in linear basis. basically - passport #1 has Serial ID with 1 in the end
passport 200 would have it with 200 in the end.

While build date and serial by itself should not disclose anything (as it is not IMEI and is not used anywhere), having those two figures in one place we could do the following:

built on 1st Sep 2014 - SN lets say 4550-7774-000100 - this lets say Passport #100
    built on 15thh Sep 2014 - SN 4550-7774-010100 - this one passport 10100

this would avoid wrong assumption if we take just SN (where the begining could show: buit batch, shift, date, number) and one would show 4550-7774-010100 and another built earlier shows 4550-7774-020100

hope you understand what I mean

basically, if we have only one criteria (just build date or just SN) we could not make any assumptions about numbers they have produced (and we already bought).
having build date and SN (at least fragment) - might be possible to check - how many passport they made.

assuming that firslt they have shipped one which were produced earlier - we could see amount of potentially sold, with some tolerance.

I don't know but I have a felling that the serial numbers are not sequential. If it was me deciding how to make up the serial number, I wouldn't make them sequential for the very reason you are hoping they are.

Or you could check the box... it usually says when it's built right?

when built =! number built as it can be 100 passports/day built or it can be 1000/day.

mine will, most probably, built in mid November.

Even if people posted their serial numbers and dates, I don't think you are going to be able to deduct from that the number made.

It is likely that the serial number incorporates a number of pieces of information that would prevent analyzing them sequentially. You will probably find it includes, build plant, assembly line, batch number, color designation, etc. Then each of those unique combinations probably have their own sequential numbers, probably duplicating what was used for the other combinations.

I do hope, sincerely hope, that BlackBerry and BlackBerry 10 can last and generate some profit to stay in the business. But I am not interested in how many devices they have sold. Wish you luck. I got four Passports and have no idea which to reveal its serial number.
