I hope they do. How hard is it to just print the first and second level symbols on the physical key?! Nothing needs to be change on the SW side...just print them on the physical keys.....maybe we will have to go back to the old days of putting stickers on the keyboard?! that will be so innovative of Blackberry!!!! Getting user to buy and install stickers on keyboard. LOL

I hope BlackBerry does read these forums and realizes how polarized people are about this device. And this is a BlackBerry fan site!! If the people on this site are so divided, then just imagine how the general public (who for the most part doesn't like BlackBerry) is going to react to this device.
I hope BlackBerry comes out with a state of the art awesome looking all touch device soon. In the mean time, The Z3 is pretty nice and if it gets LTE I will be getting one just for the heck of it.

How would you know you have to hit the on screen shift key to use caps? I'm sure it's like any other BlackBerry keyboard and you hold down the key to make it capital. I couldn't see them changing that...

Yes with holding the key, you get a capital letter for sure. But how do you want to be entering special characters on the Passport ?

I do agree that they should of made it like all the other BlackBerry keyboards but no one really knows what it's going to be like yet

Why should they make it "like all other BlackBerry keyboards" if they're essentially inventing a new input method?

I have no doubt that the development of this keyboard involved dozens--maybe hundreds--of engineers and human factors specialists, and I'm sure they had all the same discussions we're having here.

I'm coming to view the Passport as having not so much a "physical keyboard" as a "virtual keyboard augmented by buttons".

I want my Android to be gesture based and not require stupid back and home buttons. What's your point? If you don't like the design and/or you are not willing to give it a chance then just pick something else. Once we have the device in hand and have had the opportunity to evaluate it properly we can comment on how "successful" or "not successful" the design is really.

No, it's not because my trackpad is the keyboard.
It's my keyboard that is gone.


And by the way, the trackpad is a huge step back for the Q10, I drastically reduced the time I type on the phone.
I used to write wall of text, replying on email more from the phone even if I had the PC with Outlook open in front of me.

As you can live without it, you cannot deny the fact that is a big loss and a step down in productivity. They could have resolved all of this with the Passport, reintroducing the trackpad without the toolbelt, but they removed the keyboard.
One small step forward, one giant leap backward.

Especially after the company cut so deep into their workforce.....probably only a few capable remains...so I am not so certain of the "well thought out" point. I have seen that in other company....when all capable people left / fired.....decision often only base on what one guy saids.

Are you just saying that because it reinforces your contention that the Passport's keyboard is a bad design? Are you familiar with the term "circular argument"?

BlackBerry is the "keyboard company". They'd lay off the cleaning staff before they got rid of their human factors engineers.

No, the Passport is not just "a huge Q10". The input system is a completely new hybrid physical/touch keyboard system that--if it works--could be revolutionary.

And it's not just the larger screen, either. The Passport's screen is large enough and dense enough to display content in 16:9 vertically or horizontally. The vertical display will eliminate the scaling problems from the Q10 (a fair number of Android apps won't work on the Q10/Q5 just because UI elements wind up outside the window and can't be reached). This is also a fairly distinctive feature; I know I'VE never seen a phone that does this.

And, finally, the Passport looks like no other phone out there right now. The style will certainly attract attention far more than the 9900-like Q10.

Good points. I'd still like physical ALT and SYM keys for speed and the convenience of not having to reach up to the screen to punctuate or type numbers, but I think everything you said was true and important.

You don't need to "reach up". Each num/sym key maps to a physical key.

All is needed is to print more characters on keys and then no more virtual keyboard since we don't need to type on the screen.

The one line contextual on-screen keyboard is always displayed, the numbers and symbols keyboard requires you to either perform a gesture on the touch sensitive hardware keyboard which interrupts typing flow, or to reach up to the screen to hit an on-screen alt button which also interrupts typing flow. Regardless of having to reach up to the screen to type numbers and symbols or not, they should have included numbers and basic/commonly used symbols on the hardware keyboard from the get go, like every single QWERTY keyboard before it. Gestures and on-screen keyboards are not an apt replacement for a fully featured and fully functional QWERTY hardware keyboard; and any real QWERTY keyboard user can tell you this without having to use the crippled hardware keyboard on the Passport. It's just plain common sense.
