That's a bit of a stretch. Encryption is never useless, per se'. Excessive? Perhaps. But not useless. The average person doesn't encryupt data to protect against the Feds. Attackers, hackers and intruders are rarely feds to the average person.
Some interesting side information. My best friend is a director for a forensics firm, and they've yet to ever crack a blackberry. Iphone and android, yup. Plenty. Iphones are a bit tougher. But never, ever a BlackBerry. There is a theoretical way of cracking BlackBerry data, but he's never seen it conducted successfully.

I would argue that losing all the information on your SD card if your device fails is a drawback.
