I am loving it! Going to a casino for their lobster buffet so if you see some guy with a BlackBerry Passport in a casino restaurant's lobster buffet, that would be me. Say hello.

My former phone was a BlackBerry Curve 9330 so this is a huge upgrade for me. I like the Passport so much I have hardly touched my tablets this past week. Usually, I use my tablets as I do not use the Curve to browse the web and most other uses for a phone are very limited on the Curve. I have vastly improved my typing speed since Day 1. The keyboard and size of the phone needed some getting used to. At first, I planned on leaving my Passport naked. Was not planning on using either of the two cases that came with the bundle as I initially thought they did not look very nice. In fact, my first impression was that they looked cheap. I put the leather flex shell on a couple of days ago to see how it would look and I liked it. The flex shell looks better when the Passport is in it. I find that I type better on the phone when it is dressed in the flex shell. So the flex shell stays on.

In my one week of using the Passport, I have encountered four situations where I need some help from all you kind folks:

    1. My Passport restarts itself occasionally. It has done so about four times the last seven days. Why does it do this? Did I accidentally hit some key or do some swipe gesture to trigger it? Or is it defective?

    2. Can the phone be set to receive incoming calls when the FM radio is playing? I was playing the radio through the speakers and missed an incoming call. I searched settings to try to deal with this but could not find anything to help.

    3. Is there a way to change the default "Sent From My BlackBerry 10 Smartphone" message on my outgoing communications?
    If so, how?

    4. Why is it that when I enter the home phone, work phone and other phone numbers for a contact, it automatically creates text number entries for them too? This is annoying as I only need the mobile text number but I end up having multiple text numbers for a contact. Last night, I meant to send a text to a contact as part of a group message. This person did not receive my text while the others received it fine. I looked into it and saw that the text apparently went to a number which does not have text service, and did not go to that contact's mobile phone.

    Responses appreciated, solutions most appreciated.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the passport!

I can't answer all your questions but here's my view on some.

    1. It definately shouldn't be restarting itself, have you pressed the up and down volume keys together for about 10 seconds as this will restart the phone? I would suggest sending it back if it is just doing this randomly as it would seem to be a fault.

    2. Not sure I've not used the radio.

    3. Go into the hub and hit the 3 dots at the bottom right, hit settings, email accounts, then select the account you want to change, it will bring up the auto signature text which you can change or just turn off.

    4. I'm not sure there is a way to change this but I agree it would be useful.

    Hope this helps.

I haven't encountered this problem with my PP but from my past smartphones (Adnroid, Windows) I know that this is a serious problem with the OS which, in turn, may be caused by hardware defect. Don't try to use it anymore. Have it repaired ASAP.

Just something you want to check because I ran into this as well: Since the power button is at the top, it is very easy to at least power it off. It happened to me a few times when I put the PP heads up into a compartment (car)

A reset usually requires to press 'Restart' on the screen - so this might not exactly apply to what you're seeing

The FM radio should not impede your capability for phone calls. Nothing other than airplane mode can stop phone calls from coming in.

The phone should not be resetting.. perhaps look for a pattern, like 'it reboots when I put it on a table' or something. Might be bad luck, might be a defect. Don't be shy to ask for a warranty exchange if you purchased it through BlackBerry or a vendor.

When you compose a text and put a contacts name in all the contacts numbers you have come up and you have to choose the mobile number from the list.

It's very easy to select the wrong number and send the text to a land line or work number, an option to tell the contacts app which number to use for text messages would be very useful to avoid this.

I tried selecting a cell number and email for the same person and it worked. What happens if I typed a message and clicked send? It'd be awesome if I can send a text and email from the same platform.

Guess what? I composed a text to myself and also included my e-mail address.
However, before sending, my phone shows that it defaulted to an MMS message instead of text.
Both my phone and e-mail got the message. However, the sender e-mail address is shown as: MyPhone#@PhoneCarrierAddress.com

Tried replying to the e-mail to see if I would get a message back to my phone, but it didn't work, the e-mail bounced.

EDIT: Apparently this feature is available through some carriers.

The issue/problem has nothing to do with whether one sends or does not send group text messages. Rather, Contacts appears to be flawed on the Passport. When one enters, say a mobile phone number for, e.g., John Doe, it automatically creates a "Text Mobile" number for that same number. Now, if Contacts would only stop at that, this would probably be fine as most mobile phones would be using the text message function. Therefore, automatically creating the Text Mobile number for John Doe would be convenient.

However, Contacts does not stop at that. If one were to continue and add for example, two additional phone numbers for John Doe, such as "Work phone" and "Other phone", Contacts would also automatically create "Text Work" and "Text Other" fields for these additional numbers. I usually input a contact's home phone number as "Other phone". Therefore, Contacts would have created two text numbers for John Doe, i.e., his work and home numbers, which do not have text functionality at all. This creates confusion and inconvenience.

In my original post, I mentioned the incident where my group text failed to get to one of my contacts because the Passport automatically selected that contact's non-text functioning number rather than the text-functioning number which was the mobile phone's number. I did not realize I had multiple text numbers for that contact in Contacts. The Passport did not ask or prompt me on which of the three text numbers I wanted the message to go to for this particular contact. I just saw the name entered into the recipients' field and assumed it selected the correct text number. After all, I only had one text number which was the mobile phone number I saved for that contact.

Work numbers and home numbers are typically not text numbers. Why the heck does the Passport Contacts function automatically create text numbers for them? This is the problem.

The way BlackBerry handles contacts is stupid. A user should only be able to send text messages to contact under the mobile category.

I've practically deleted all of my contacts land line numbers. I know that's not useful for business professionals who have office numbers and things on there, but it cut out the chances of texting a number that isn't a cell phone.

This is a BB10 issue not isolated to the Passport unfortunately.

I have accidentally tried to send a text to a non text number. Now I always check to see if it says mobile on the right margin when I use the search function. Cured the problem but I do agree that BlackBerry not make auto text for any numbers except mobile.

Did you send the device back? My restarted itself the 2nd day I had the device. Then today, it restarted itself 3 time while I was using the phone. Everytime I was using a different app or had slightly different apps running in the background so I'm afraid that it might not be software related.

I'd hate to have to send my device back.

I too have had my passport for over a week now and I just love it. I cannot see myself going back to android, I love the physical keyboard over the on screen one, I love the screen size, quality and crispness. I got my passport as my wife had gotten one and I really like the phone, I began looking to purchase one but was not finding one in my price range. A couple days later my wife informed me that she found a passport and arranged to purchase it for me as a gift all day the excitement grew till the time came for the exchange. After receiving the passport I played around with it for hours setting things up the wife did the cobalt adds for Google services and set up the hub for me. I will forever be indebted and so happy that my wife was able to bring back to blackberry after a just over a 7 year hiatus.

Thanks, I've submitted an online return request through shopblackberry.

OP, if you're still experiencing this issue, I suggest returning your device.
I performed a factory reset yesterday and my device restarted itself again this morning.

Thank you very much for the information. Very nice of you to keep me informed of your actions in dealing with this problem with our phones. I will hold off on returning the phone for an exchange. I have been keeping a log on when this happens and it has not happened for about three days now. I will risk keeping the phone for a while longer to see if the problem will go away by itself. When it restarts, it does so quite quickly so while it has been annoying, it is not a great inconvenience so far. I may be able to live with it.

I will wait and see as I do not like receiving a refurbished unit to replace my brand new one. I assume they will only give a refurbished unit and not a brand new one as this was the experience I had with one of my PlayBooks. Another reason I will wait is that when I first activated and used my Passport, I noticed battery life was not good, at least not nearly as long-lasting as I had read about. However, it has gotten better with each recharge. I believe I am now getting the promised battery life or close to it. No complaints on battery life for me currently. I hope I will have similar luck with the restarting problem and that it will go away.

Thanks also to the others who have responded and offered their suggestions too.
