Just curious, what offers the best picture? I also use 1:1, since it fits our phones the best, but I noticed that when I have those pictures professionally printed, they NEVER fit and always have to be cropped. Whereas, my gf's iPhone5 has perfectly shaped pic's typically. I love the picture on my passport, although it's EASIER to take a good picture with her iPhone5 but when I DO take a good picture with my passport, it's eons better than her iPhone5.

Suggestions?

Well, the 4:3 aspect ratio is the native resolution of the camera module on the Passport.

Meaning that you get the maximum number of pixels the hardware can produce when using 4:3.

When you use the 1:1 or 16:9, all it actually does is crop/delete part of the image to give you that ratio.

To test it out, take a picture from the same spot with all 3 ratios and compare. You'll notice that 4:3 is the one that captures more content.

Point is, that you get the maximum resolution when using 4:3.

Best to always use 4:3 and then just use the image editor on the Passport to crop to 1:1 or 16:9 if you need those resolutions.

Same result.

Whattttt? Are you serious? I thought, for some reason, that maximum resolution was at 1:1! Well shoot! So how many mega pixel do I actually achieve at 1:1 then? I'm changing to 4:3 right now!

For the Passport:

4:3 is 4160�3120=12,979,200 = 13MP

16:9 is 4160�2340=9,734,400 = 10MP

1:1 is 3120�3120=9,734,400 = 10MP

I play with the video resolution settings on that app to record videos that have a small enough file size to send over BBM. Works great, but the number of options can be a bit much lol

I always find my Z10 pictures better than my Passport.
So my after reading that Passport 1:1 only uses 10mp (not 13mp) on that mode I hastely concluded that that's the reason why I'm not satisfied on my passport's photo quality.

But that doesn't matter now, after reading that Z10 camera is only 8mp. So it's not about picture ratio after all.

SMC, the BB guy working on the Camera app on the Priv has said the same thing about resolution. Take the picture at 4:3 (or 3:4) and then do your own cropping. Now, that obviously requires work and after the fact aesthetics. Using 4:3 seems less satisfying when that leaves blank space on the screen. That appearance is what caused me to change my Z30 and then the Priv to 16:9. It is also easier to compose using the full screen and seeing what the ultimate image (TV widescreen) will look like.

I did find a Win program that allows you to move a 16:9 rectangle over the 4:3 and just crop it. Now discretion comes into play

I will add that I discovered the program in a Youtube tutorial on how to crop 4:3 images to 16:9.

Most digital camera sensors are made with a 4:3 aspect ratio, so using a 1:1 picture ratio would result in fewer pixels.
The iPhone 4/4S used a 3:2 ratio which matches a standard 4x6 print. Newer iPhones are 16:9.
When making 4x6 print from a 4:3 ratio camera you may not notice the cropping that occurs at the top and bottom of the original image.

I have used FastStone Image Viewer for years. It has a wide range of features and is quick and easy to use. Just slide your mouse to the side or bottom of the screen to bring up the pop-up menu options. For a quick crop just press "x" and choose the ratio you want.

Interesting to know! I have only taken a few petty pictures so far going from 1:1 to 4:3, so I cannot attest... but I am going to test this out soon.

Yes, but the shape is what gives the possibilities. I wouldn't use 1:1 on a widescreen display - makes no sense.

But some of the image is already cropped out when you take a 1:1 picture. What if you wanted to use a part that is no longer there?

Absolutely. Unfortunately you were taking a crop of a crop while cropping the 1:1 to 4:3 for prints. I feel like you'll notice a difference for the upcoming shots. When I had my Passport, I was using a 5S at the same time. I would rate both cameras equal, in the sense that they both excel in differing conditions/types of shots.

Here's essentially what happened:



The whole image is what your camera's sensor was able to see. The square is what the camera cropped the picture to because you had it set to 1:1 ratio. Then, when you had the photos printed, they were cropped again to fit the approx 4:3 paper - that's the rectangle in the middle.

Conite, I believe Yertie is talking about the creative process instead of what creative potentials exist with capturing all the camera can. Ie, the square format let's him see what he is capturing in a different perspective than he otherwise would.
