Snapdragon 800 is a family of processors. BlackBerry went for a customised 801 and so they only specify the broader processor family, not the exact model.

I ran the Antutu benchmark on my Passport and even though it is an Android app, it scored higher than the Nexus 5 which uses the Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3GHz. It is definitely a much newer and better SoC.

MSM8974AA according to the device. Probably 800, since this has been in development for a very long time.

Note3(NA), S4(NA), Nexus 5 and other Android phones all use the Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AA and also vary in the Antutu scores so that in itself doesn't mean anything. Things like devices drivers. memory optimizations and kernal development all have an affect on scores.

True, but if the Passport can achieve similar or better results than many Android phones with higher clocked SoCs (in an Android benchmark app!) I think it is safe to say that it has a newer model of Snapdragon 800.

Plus, it has already been confirmed by Bla1ze that it uses a modified Snapdragon 801.

The fastest revision of the 800 is the 8974-AB that has CPU speed up to 2.36 vs 2.26 Ghz and GPU speed 550Mhz vs 450 but that is not what Thurask is reporting. Qualcomm wouldn't spend resources building another revision just for BB as the 801 is already available and is basically an optimized 800.

They wouldn't build a new chip just for BlackBerry, but they would certainly tweak an existing design.

There are 2 MSM8974AA processors in the Snapdragon 800 family: 800 and 801. It could very well be the second one with some minor changes.

Again 'tweaking' as what you are inferring would result in a different revision model#. As per your chart MSM8974AA 801 differs from the MSM8974AA 800 has a higher clock CPU/GPU so it should be a simple operation to go into the CPU info screen of Antutu to see which it is.

I heard, indirectly from a BB employee, that the information on the BlackBerry website might be outdated and that it is in fact a 801. Not sure how much that information is worth, or what the actual difference would be, but I'd consider the people I heard it from reliable.

Its certainly possible. The 800 in the Nexus 5 is almost a year old from retail sale and the 801 is in the S5 from 6 months ago. Given the small differences it makes little sense to use the 800 in the Passport.

    interesting tip!
i can't believe how much amateurism is still present on a company as big as Blackberry!
During the presentation the guy who did by the way an excellent job gave 4GB of RAM, then during an idiotic interview with a BBC "journalist" the blackberry representative didn't correct the journalist who were insisting on the lack of Instagram in BB World when he could have mentioned IGrann (not cool for the guys who make the effort to produce some apps for our ecosystem...), now BB website giving "outdated" specs about the passport...
There's still a lot to do for a company that only has "serious business" in its mouth...

Strange that indicates a MSM8974AA but at 2150Mhz? Can you download CPU-Z via Snap (Amazon has the old CPU-Z v1.07 and may report faulty info) and screenshot the SOC tab? It will show the revision 2 or 3 as well as the model#.

Interesting. Perhaps TheoRadu is correct and the Passport has a yet to be identified 800 series revision. Seems strange though. The Moto X had its own version of the Snapdragon S4 but that was in order to add contextual processors to work with the SOC and I can't figure a reason the Passport would need its own.

Blackberry Website says it's the 801

BlackBerry Passport Specs ? Specifications for BlackBerry Passport Smartphone - US

But the difference in practise between the 800 and 801 is negligible, is more marketing that anything else, there are a few benchmarks comparing them.

The Z30 used a tweaked S4 Pro SoC which didn't result in a different revision name.

And I'm not sure where you saw that. Both versions of the MSM8974AA have the same max CPU/GPU frequencies (2.3GHz and 450MHz respectively) according to that comparison table.

Sorry yes you are right on that. Was the Z30 a change in the SOC or just kernel level tweaks to adjust the CPU range for example. The latter is firmware/software and doesn't depend on Qualcomm.so no need for revision name.

Don't know exactly what the tweaks were, but BlackBerry said they used a custom SoC to enhance security (it was in a blog post I think). Probably some hardware level encryption and a non standard frequency. It also had a quad core GPU which wasn't mentioned in the standard S4 spec sheet.
