What's the best setting to take snapshots of kids? About half my pics now out of focus.

Hold the shutter with your finger then let go when focus.

I've noticed the first picture I usually want to capture doesn't come out well.
But once to camera focuses I lock the focus and can usually get multiple great pictures after that first one.

I am dying to know the answer to this too. Both of the above options work fine for me only if the subject is statue still.

I have both the app that came w phone and camera++ app. Which is better for quick in focus pics of kids.

Even after the recent 10.3.1 update, while the camera improved, the ability to quickly focus is still an issue.

Stationary items are no problem at all. Holding the shutter button until it focuses and releasing to capture the image works, but the time required to achieve perfect focus on 'less than stationary' objects like children is still much too long, in my opinion.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much coming from iphone 6 which took stunning pics.

Try the 'Action' scene... I usually getting excellent pictures of moving subject with this scene especially in an outdoor environment i.e. brighter...

And yes, I have to admit, when compared with other flagship devices, BlackBerry Passport is not really an impressive device for capturing those wonderful moments...

I don't think that any of us are "asking too much" of the phone to take quality action shots like EVERY other comparably priced device on the market. I'm with you, Steve - guess I got too used to my iPhone.

Is it an app issue or hardware issue?

I second the Camera ++ app. Check the two long threads here of photos taken with the Passport, some real beauties including kids.

If it is still can be improved through OS update, then it is software...

But somehow I have also a feeling that the hardware itself is not that cutting-edge technology to compete with other latest devices...

Use time shift. Use it all the time with the kids and works great. Being able to save the time shift and edit later is a really nice option as well. Sometimes can get 2 to 3 great pics out of one moment.

Action scene is pretty good as well.

The snap shot on camera++ is pretty nice and does a great job.

If you want take nice pictures, don't use a BlackBerry. Invest 200 in a Nokia Lumia 830 and you have both. Lovely phone and awesome camera. Has three microphones and shoots perfect videos with Dolby surround, too.

Camera++ app using snapshot mode is slightly better than the stock camera app. But it's still not up to par with other flagship phones. Camera++ app can only improve slightly because eventually it still calls the Camera API of Blackberry.

The problem is software. Because apparently the camera module used is the same as the one used in the LG G2/G3 and other android flagship phones. So there should be no reason it can't perform as good as those phones.

The Camera has been one of the weakest point of the otherwise excellent Passport.
