The best way is to use BaSA. This shows a good and very informative active frame with a readable number.
I also used Power Tools. This has now a new mode which shows a simulated bar on top, where a percent number is permanently shown and updated, no need to have an active frame. But the implementation of this feature draws the text directly onto the background image and changes the modified image again and again which causes the OS to display this idiotic message that the background image has changed again and again, especially when you do something. This is the wrong way and makes the feature unusable.
If you swipe up anytime from any page or app, the battery percentage shows up instantly.

There are apps for screen chang. You can add weather, battery%, as well as some other stuff for your main screen.
