Has a lot of trouble focusing for closeups. On every occasion, with the passport held rock steady, and with a large subject to focus on, the autofocus searches straight through the sharpest position and settles on a blurred shot.

Is this a known issue - do other SE users see the same behaviour?

I would recommend getting the camera++ app it allows manual and Macro options. It'll help a lot with photography.

Silly question. Are you zooming in fully to engage the native camera's macro functionality ?

Thanks for the suggestions; I'd assumed that the results of auto-focus happened below the level of app control, but I'll try alternatives anyway.

Certainly not a stupid question to ask about zoom, but I usually avoid digital zoom as it's the same as taking a normal image and cropping and resizing afterwards. But it might help me pin down at what point autofocus starts giving reliable results.

Camera++ for reliable macro photos and manual focus. I find I am starting to use Camera++ more often. It really helps for Macros up close.

It absolutely is, but in the case of close photography, it also engages the macro focus mode in the BlackBerry camera. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes.

Sometimes a simple trick helps: tap the screen on a spot close to the one you want to get focussed. And miracle! By focussing the neighbourhood the camera clears also the desired spot. This happened to me several times particularly when trying to focus a Christmas tree with many lights. A camera fault? Maybe, but I've learnt during my life that it is essential to show machines who is the slave and who the master!
