Has anyone else living in colder climates noticed that it is almost next to impossible to type on the Passport keyboard with cold hands and when the device is cold?

My screen scroll jumps all over the place when I try to scroll using the keypad.
Words / symbols / punctuations are inputted into my messages, without flicking up on the keyboard.
Words are deleted without swiping left on the keyboard.

Seems to take on a mind of its own and starts acting all buggy. Works fine indoors or when it's warmer outdoors (above freezing).

I tried running the BBVE keyboard test outdoors, and it confirms my problem when cold.
I swipe along the top row of keys and it senses the top and bottom rows.
The colder the device gets, the worse the keyboard reacts.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? I contacted BlackBerryHelp on Twitter and they advised me to bring my Passport back to my carrier to open a case with BlackBerry for live investigation, diagnosis and resolution. Whatever that is supposed to mean???

If there is any hardware out there that should work well in the cold, it should be BlackBerry, no? Lol

No. Bare hands. Would be hard to type with gloves on. I have found a couple posts about this issue, but I am wondering if it is my device itself that is defective, or is really a problem with the Passport? If they had an option for a full on screen virtual keyboard, then it would solve the problem with the physical keyboard going all haywire in the cold. You would think that they would have tested it in different temperatures and weather conditions?

Keep it inside your jacket or get it warranted.

even if it's a design issue it seems like you could turn off/on touch keyboard w/ an os update...but i'm no expert.

I had issues when it was cold out but it was mostly because my hands can't type has quickly when cold. The device itself was fine.

Might be a defective hardware, you should contact your provider or BlackBerry

Thanks, but it is not an issue with the touch screen. The problem is with the physical keyboard.

I find its actually okay to type with gloves on for the Passport since the keys are so big, albeit thin gloves, but better something than nothing.

Can you see if someone else has the same problems? I am wondering if your fingers like change their capacitive ability in the cold.

I have same problem too! Touch keyboard go crazy in outdoor only with around 0 C. Delete words, wrong accident swipes.. But touch screen is working good. May be a some moisture with change around temp? It change from a body temp to outdoor temp quickly when you give in hands and maybe it make a condensation?

Next time I am out with my wife and it starts acting crazy in the cold, I will get her to try it and see if it has the same reaction. I don't know anyone else personally with the device to ask them if theirs does the same thing or to compare them side by side.

I have had this issue also. My phone was in my back pocket and very cold. Keyboard input was almost impossible. I have since kept the phone in an inside pocket which has solved the problem so far. Will see if this still works once temperature hits -30's. But I guess at minus 30, I won't be using my phone much anyways.

I noticed this yesterday when I was trying to use keyboard gestures with cold hands. It took a couple of tries for gestures to work. I sort of expect it with anything electronic with cold hands. Touch screen work fine though.

Notice it too, was blaming the strong wind at first then realised that the problem was cold. Not too pleasant since winter is coming but I can live with it.

Thanks everyone, at least now I know that it is not my device that is defective. Seems like a major design flaw however. I would have expected better testing in different climate conditions from BlackBerry, especially since they're from the Great White North !

The only one workaround today is use 10.3.1 Leaked fw and disable touch gestures on keyboards in settings.
Hope they fine tune touch gestures filters in future OSes...

Oh well I guess I'll wait for passport 2 or a new minor revision in a future batch, sounds like to me that there are too many issues with the passport right now :/

Had this problem once when temperature was slightly above zero. I would assume that this is a problem when the phone itself is warm but the surrounding temperature is substantially colder.
