Anyone disappointed watching videos on Passport due to square screen?-img_20141024_194801.jpg

Older shows look kind of cool on the Passport haha.

Sorry to go all mathsy, but in a 16:9 screen, the long edge is 80% of the diagonal. This means that the passport at 3.18 inches wide is the same as a 16:9 screen at 3.97 inches diagonal. So a 4 inch phone has the same video size. In a lot of players, you can zoom to fill the screen as well.

For the bit of video I have watched the square screen hasn't bothered me at all. Although, I don't really use my phone for it, I could very well see myself watching a full length movie on here when the need arises.

There were some video players on Google Play that were capable of changing the aspect, but since I haven't got an Android anymore, I forgot their names. But Jesus how much some people whine about this! I watched The Shining on my old Curve, now everybody wants widescreen tvs in their hands! My advice (even if some some will hate me) would be to buy a phone that allows you to watch movies, etc in landscape. Stop ******** about it,, nobody asked you to buy the Passport and this "issue" was known prior to the unveiling.

The big, square screen of the Passport has many advantages, but apparently one disadvantage is that there is no elongated landscape mode for watching movies/tv shows/video clips, so apparently whenever one does, the top and bottom of the square screen is blacked off and one ends up watching a much smaller video, similar to how my old square TV does the same thing with today's newer HD programming. I will be getting the Passport primarily for battery life and its practical/business oriented uses, but it would still be nice to not be frustrated if on occasion I want to use it for other reasons.

I am wondering if anyone has used their Passport yet for watching movies and such, if they noticed this issue, and their thoughts on it, pro or con? Thanks.
Yeah I'm disappointed as you are, I expected the screen to expand horizontally on both sides or at least magically turn into a 16:9 one when rotating the phone into landscape./s

....are you serious? How can you be disappointed when this was nothing but clear and logic? You bought a phone with a square screen. Videos are 16:9. So either the video gets zoomed up and the sides get cut off, or you see the entire video with black bars on top and underneath. There's physically no other way possible and you should have known this before you bought the phone, since it's just logic. The 16:9 screen area that can be displayed on the Passport is between the iPhone 4 and 5 in landscape in terms of size.

    Actually better than I expected.
Video formats go up in powers of 3 and 4 so really the only resolutions that make sense now are 1:1 4:3 16:9 and 64:27. Arguably 16:10 has merits on all touch devices because allows for a slider at the bottom.
Obviously 67:27 (often referred to as 21:9) is most compromised on 1:1 display. As this format is becoming more popular would be nice to be able to play 2 videos simultaneously one above the other on the passport pause them independently etc. Play sound from just one or both. Decide which one to stream over hdmi or mirrorcast.
Say I might want to watch original star wars against the later touched up versions to spot the differences? Or watch same video but have it open at 2 places. That would be a neat feature for people who really like there videos.

Let's just come right out and say it. Passport is terrible, awful and absolutely no good for viewing pornography, which is a legitimate business function for the lonely outside sales person or business traveler.

BlackBerry needs to address this need with a large screen phone that can be operated with ONE HAND.

I think it's always good to go to a shop and test the phone out before buying. Instead of blindly buying a phone because it's new.

Agreed if you do the calcs and equalise all them to a 16:9 diagonal aspect ratio you get:

    Iphone 4/4s: 3.5"
    Passport: 3.65"
    Iphone 5/5s: 4.0"
    Z10: 4.2"
    Z30: 5.0"

And I don't know about you but ALL phone screens are small. My preference for movies is big screen TV's, secondary preference is a tablet.. and lastly it's just nice to watch videos on my phone that I take everywhere with me.. the size of the screen makes little difference to me.

Mine hasn't shipped yet but given that I hate turning my phone sideways and usually always have rotation lock on, I won't care in fact I'll have more view area than my z10 so I think I'll be happier

This thread made me remember a moment where my friend wanted to show me a funny youtube clip from SNL, which was so funny she told me. However the screen was quite nice (IPhone 5s), I couldn't hear a damn thing with that phone turned up so loud, yet I still laughed out loud (because I couldn't hear anything).

One a side note, my dad played some music on his Passport and I was kinda freaked out because it was so damn loud haha!

Just as we speak about mobile video (since video on your phone will always be MOBILE because why would you use a screen that tiny at home, right?), could some of you please enlighten me?

For years now people on the (tech-) internet speak of big smartphone screens and the missing netflix app for BlackBerry devices. So can someone please tell me how all this video-on-the-go makes sense? I mean a regular episode of a 50 minute TV show has around 3-4 Gigs in 1080p, easily 2GB in 720p and at like the worst resolution downloadable it's still 350 to 600 MB per episode. May I ask what kind of dataplans you guys have? Cause even 2 and a half episodes at like the worst image quality imaginable would eat up my monthly mobile data completely. So can someone please educate me on how mobile video can be this big of a deal for people?

Oh no, I know the answer. Video on smartphone screens has exactly that one single purpose: you get a new phone, unbox it and to check out that new gorgeous screen it has, you turn into landscape and launch a 1080p video and you are stunned how gorgeous it looks. It makes you happy. You say things like "omg look what an amazing video experience I have readily available from now on, always in my pocket, wherever I go" - and this makes you love your new phone. Then for the rest of the two years you carry that phone you occasionally check some bad quality 2 minute YouTube video about news or fun, while even watching it briefly in portrait mode cause you're too lazy to rotate it like 50% of the time. Because it eats too much data and drains the battery too much. Yep.

So the Passport will be awesome for me since while the screen excels at everything other than video, I can even watch the biggest videos in portrait without rotating the screen. Bam.

Love it as is. Videos are fine. Love using 4x3 photo mode as the controls don't block the photo area as do 16x9 so that's a definite plus vs the regular phones.
I really appreciates the the fact you don't need to rotate to phone to watch a video clip. That bothered me more.

I find it hilarious that people (especially the idi0t reviewers on tech blogs) make such a big deal out of this... I mean, honestly.... do the black bars make you have an epileptic seizure or do they somehow ruin the content of the video or something? sheesh...

Do you also have an epileptic seizure or become "disappointed" when watching HD movies on the computer, because those have black bars too, yet I don't see anyone complaining about that... (hmmm... interesting isn't it?)

As others have stated, I believe it is extremely handy not having to turn the phone into landscape mode to watch. Just click play and watch away... It really is that simple.

I find that when I used my Z30 for quick videos, I rarely turned my phone to landscape mode to watch videos, so technically the video plays bigger on my Passport than it did on my Z30.

When I watch movies and TV shows, I always downloaded them and then streamed them through miracast to a TV screen, so it doesn't make a difference going from Z30 to Passport (aside from the fact that miracast works so much better on the Passport).

Watching full length shows or movies on the Passport itself is not as bad as I thought it would be, I do it so rarely that it's not an issue.

Not necessarily. It depends on the content and the screen. If you are watching content that uses the full 16:9 space (anything made for TV) and are on a 16:9 computer screen....then you won't see any blank space. All videos are 16:9 as the actual file, but if the content was originally shot even wider (2.39:1) such as most feature films, even a 16:9 screen would show the blank spaces because those are INCLUDED in the video. If you're on a Passport, or an Ipad, your blank spaces (aka "black bars") would be even bigger.
