So I'm trying to stream Showbox (Android App) to my Samsung HDTV via Miracast and obviously the video is letterboxed within the already-small square, resulting in a tiny movie on the TV.
I even tried using MXPLAYER (Android App) as the external player, with the same result (only difference is that MXPLAYER gives different aspect and stretch ratios, but all are still within the square box).
Are we out of luck when it comes to this?
With the Slimport adapter (which I was going to order), am I still going to be stuck with the same aspect ratio issues? I'm not optimistic on a 1920x1080 output option via HDMI and being able to stretch the pic to fit.

Slimport won't make a difference. BlackBerry just chose not to support independent full screen resolutions on an external display when mirroring on the passport. Funnily enough the Z10's screen resolution is 768 x 1280 yet it can mirror and fill the screen of a 1920 x 1200 monitor. When the Z10 's output resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 the image appears vertically stretched and fills the screen on the external monitor. When the Z10's output resolution is set to 1920 x 1200 there's slight letter boxing on the top and bottom of the screen but it's pixel perfect. So if BlackBerry allowed a similar implementation on the Passport, then when mirroring, the icons and hub might appear stretched horizontally on a widescreen display but if you're displaying a movie which is of the same wide format of the screen it would have been able to fill and fit on the screen properly. I think there are better ways in which the display output could be handled on the 1:1 ratio devices. BlackBerry is just lazy or doesn't care when it comes to that in my opinion. If they were really innovative they would come up with a more creative solution that gives more options and less limitations to its customers. So, right now, our solution to that problem if we want to stick with BlackBerry would be to buy a Z10 or Z30.

It takes some time getting used to, but I am not disappointed. I'm more disappointed by how many video file types it does NOT play. I guess BB didn't load all the available codecs out there.

It's not down to luck. It depends on if the playback app supports the Play On feature or not. The BlackBerry browser and Videos app supports it so if you playback a file using the browser or the Videos app you will have the option to play it back full screen. Ironically as well as stupidly, if you try to play a video using the file manager, the integrated video player in the file manager doesn't support the Play On feature so if you want to stream movies full screen, from your computer using just the the file manager you can't.

It is extremely satisfied to read book, documents, and look at maps.
The real question is: how do
someone can read when
the margin is too narrow
like this as it appears
on a candy bar form factor?

For watching show I use 7" tablet. 1080p content I use 24" monitor

No problems here. I watch a lot of Netflix on my Passport. I just double tap the screen and it trims some stuff on the sides and I like it.
