For the record, I will state that I don't watch enough videos to really be annoyed by the way videos play on the Passport.
Maybe, just regretful that your video plays on it?

Video is fine, not a problem using the playon feture.
It is flash in the browser livestreaming TV on an external monitor that is the problem.
I am sure a lot of people watch live TV, especially live sports, on their HDMI monitors.
That is what DOES not work on the Passport and it is annoying.
It's not about watching TV on the Passport screen..which is a nuisance but not such a big problem.

I don't watch a crazy amount of videos on smartphones, thats what a tablet is for. But I will say Netflix fills the entire screen and for Youtube, I use FastTube which lets you change the orientation to fill the screen, so no, the video works fine and for most of what I use it for fills the whole screen.

But then you end up cutting out almost half of the picture...

Yeah I get that. But all this is oftentimes so completely ripped out of context. Because the Passport CAN play video at a size between an iPhone 4 and 5. Yeah compared to many other phones in landscape that's small today, but how big of a deal it is really, generally speaking, for the vast majority of smartphone users? It is what it is: a smaller video screen for those rare moments when people actually watch a video on their phones. Now if someone does watching video on the go often and doesn't have a tablet then fine. Get a different phone, the Passport isn't for you. But don't put the device up for question in general and for everybody, as if people nowadays do nothing else with their phones than video on the go.

You gave reasons related to data, rather than dimensions, which is what I was addressing.

would still prefer to watch movies on a nice big 80 inch screen TV.
Sure, but I hate all of the dirty looks when I carry it onto a crowded BART train with me...

Just compared mine to a 5c video and very little difference. Never bothered me. I guess if you watch netflix every night and want to on your phone then a Z30 would be better.

I fail to see the problem. It's a 1:1 screen. Movies are 16:9 or in some cases narrower.

I have not been able to read all the comments and I guess nobody is ever going to read mine neither, yet, for what I read I still didn't got an answer to the question I was looking for.

In my case I can say that every now and then I see some video about unboxing, or a presentation of some kind. In Q10 or in portrait mode with z10 those videos look too small. You simply do not see the details HD video is offering.

So my question is ... what about bb pp? Do you feel you are loosing something when you see a video there?

The screen is square. How can I be disappointed with video playback when I went in with both eyes open KNOWING that the screen was square? Is this some kind of a trick question?

Ummm, tap the video to display the controls and you should see a squarish looking icon either near the bottom right or top right corner which would adjust the scaling/stretch/aspect ratio of the video.

Problem I have found is that android apps do not seemed to recognise when the passport is connected via slimport to hdmi and hence do not use the full Tv screen size but only a small box

Video output and screen mirroring on the Passport sucks compared to the Z10 or Z30 because of the 1:1 aspect ratio. If the app doesn't support the Play On feature you're out of luck. Miracast is a less than ideal solution that doesn't work for lag sensitive cases like gaming. Then you can't use HDMI output and USB OTG at the same time like you could with the Z30.

So I'm trying to stream Showbox (Android App) to my Samsung HDTV via Miracast and obviously the video is letterboxed within the already-small square, resulting in a tiny movie on the TV.
I even tried using MXPLAYER (Android App) as the external player, with the same result (only difference is that MXPLAYER gives different aspect and stretch ratios, but all are still within the square box).
Are we out of luck when it comes to this?
With the Slimport adapter (which I was going to order), am I still going to be stuck with the same aspect ratio issues? I'm not optimistic on a 1920x1080 output option via HDMI and being able to stretch the pic to fit.
