The ZTE Axon M, a smartphone with a foldable screen, is almost a perfect square when the second screen is folded out. And all the apps + the homescreen work just fine.

It's not a "lie". This is directly from the Android Design guidelines referring to aspect ratio:

"On devices other than wearables, you MUST specify a value of at LEAST 1.33 (4:3); on wearable devices, the minimum value is 1.0. If you specify a value less than the respective minimum, the system uses the default value."

This type of device is an odd edge case, that is hard to delve into without more specific information. There may be an unknown, undocumented design variation allowance for extended screens.

He only ran it in the span mode for less a second (twice). I don't know how you would conclude that all apps work fine. I think a lot of apps will have layout issues in the span "single canvas" mode. 4:3 is the bound for most people's UI tests.

The other 3 modes won't affect apps, since the apps really only stay on one screen at a time.

Is that a 1:1 ratio though? Android devices like the Optimus Vu also have a square screen but a 4:3 aspect ratio.

It's not, one can't put two 16:9 displays together and get 1:1, but it's not 4:3 either. Both screens are 1920x1080, and putting them together on the long side produces one 1920x2160 display, or 8:9.

All there is is a five minute runthrough with very little action of one app spanning both screens.
