Amazon doesn't warranty anything.

BlackBerry is who the warranty is with and their hand-sets are covered by a 1 year warranty to the original owner only.

I've been wondering about this,.. what happens if, say,.. I buy a Passport to gift to my dad immediately. Am I the original owner? Is it based on the name on the receipt? I mean, I understand that it's clear when you go through a carrier and they activate the device for you, making you the unquestionable "original owner".

How do these online unlocked transactions work?

I think as long as you have the receipt & it's within the warranty period, the warranty should be valid, regardless of whether you personally purchased it or not.

Honestly I'm not sure.. I would image if the receipt has your name on it might effect it or it might go by when the phone is activated with a BlackBerry ID that you setup? Honestly not sure but it might be worth asking BlackBerry directly.

That not the case as I know people who bought second hand unit and those owners gave them the receipts and they were denied warranty work as they weren't the original owners.

Honestly best to ask BlackBerry directly and get it in writing from twitter or email to cover yourself.

That policy seems so archaic in this day and age. I mean, it should just be valid for the warranty period, regardless of who has been using it. Back in the day people (mostly companies) would keep their BlackBerry devices for the full contract and longer. Now it seems like it goes against the modern "get the latest and greatest every half a year" business model.

I've hardly ever relied on a warranty for these types of things anyway, but I know it plays a huge factor in others' decision making.

Amazon is finally taking orders again for the Passport so I placed mine with 1 day shipping. Ship date says unknown but I'll post when they update that.

I called Saturday to try to place an order directly with Blackberry but the rep could not let me put in a order even for a later ship date. All she could offer was to buy off ebay but she laughed when I said the only one listed on the USA site was for 899.

My Amazon order is here. WooHoo!! Man I like this thing, although getting used to the physical/virtual keyboard will take some getting used to. I have it all set up. Had to cut my SIM, again. Started as a regular SIM, cut to micro SIM when I bought my Q10 and used that in my Z10 and then Z30. Now I had to cut it down to nano SIM. When I had it cut the first time, I made the mistake of letting a "cell shop" cut it in a stapler type cutter. Well they cut it crooked and hit one of the contacts. No real problem before but now, it might be. At one end, the SIM is now to slim so it can move, and if I move it then it loses contact.
So, you might figure I should just go and get a new nano SIM.......
Well, the SIM was provided by my employer in a Samsung phone. Work abandoned BB just prior to BB10 launch because they figured they could save money by not licensing BES. I hated the Sammy and Android, so I have been buying my own work phones, and hence cutting the SIM as I went. Since I live in Canada and the provider is AT&T, it is not so convenient to just pop into a store and if they send me a new SIM, I would still have to get close to or cross a border to provision the new one. Also, I don't have privilege to make changes to my wireless account so I don't know if they would provide me with a new SIM if I asked for it.

Yes, I love BB enough to bother with all of this at my own cost.
