Need some objective input from the forum.

I'm going on a family cruise adventure with a fair amount of activities such as zip lining, cave tubing, along with other normal stuff.

I was wondering if I am able to get away using my pp to photo and video everything. I plan to bravely use a waterproof pouch to keep my pp dry.

On land during the day, I'm confident the PP will shine. At night it's a toss up.

I'm asking because I'm on the fence with respect to getting a Go Pro Hero 4 camera. That's another challenge. Can't decide between silver or black if I go that route.

    Thoughts?!

Update to the latest 10.3.1 first and have camera ++ on standby. Only then I would say the passport stands a chance.

I would always bring an extra camera anyhow.

I was very happy with my Passport as my camera. Though on my flight from Dubai to London, the autofocus on my red Passport stopped working and I had to use my black Passport til I got back home to California to have Amazon send me a new red one.

same as any smartphone camera really, good but not great. I would always take a SLR or a decent compact.

Since this is a planned trip where you are planning to take lots of photos, I would seriously recommend any cheap point and shoot camera instead of your phone or even that Go Pro that you have your eye on. Ignore megapixel counts and focus on the important advantages that dedicated cameras have over phones:

    - Reliability: easier to handle and turn on. More fall/bump resistant. SD card reliability.
    - Better sensors and lenses will help in the dark
    - Better user interface and overall ergonomics
    - Enables better photography i.e. the picture taker, not the camera, makes a good picture.

The Passport and any other phone camera is fine for the odd shot here and there but if you are consciously out and about actively taking pictures, you should really have a dedicated camera. I have kept my point and shoot from 2008 that I use over my Z10 any time I am consciously trying to have a picture taking session. I go to my phone for the odd shot because it's always in my pocket but if I think "Oh! I could get some could pictures here! I immediately pull the camera out of my bag."

Get a camera. You asked for 100% reliability so I have to strongly advise against relying on your phone for this.

Mine just did me proud for 5 days in amsterdam. Put all modes through their paces and it didn't let me down. Night mode was amazing in low light and I even used the video recorder to record my proposal to my fiance while taking pics simultaneously.

Considering I was really stoned the camera on the passport did the job even when I couldn't.

Via CB10 from Scotland using PassportSQW100-1/10.3.1.2243.

You can't rely on any device 100% frankly. Do some tests in advance of the trip and see what you think is the best plan.

First, install 10.3.1.2267. The shutter speed is much, much faster than previous os versions. Seems great!

The picture quality is amazing, but the camera does struggle if there's motion in a shot. I'd suggest putting it in action mode when shooting anything that moves. Otherwise, you'll get blur.

The video quality is superb at 1080p @60fps. They always come out nice and look great on my 47" HDTV. No complaints about video. Just turn off continuous focus.

For the camera, turn off face detect as it'll keep looking for and focusing on various faces, which will slow down your shot.

All in all, I think you will be pleased!

I love my Passport but I would never use it in place of my dedicated DSLR for vacation photos. I also print my family photos for portraits and photobooks so I need the best quality I could get. One area I'm very impressed with is the 1080p 60fps video capturing. I would be confident in taking quality videos with my Passport...as long as you don't need to zoom.

Crazy suggestion: use your flash when it's dark
    Or use night mode.
Works beautifully, and try timeshift as well. It's excellent.

Haven't gone yet! Will in a few weeks.

Just got my go pro hero 4 black and am testing it out. It's pretty good. 90% of photos can be taken with that.

An amazing unit especially considering the size.
